Define the different Network Topologies Identify advantages and disadvantages for each of the topologies

The clients, servers, printers and other components are connected to one another in a circular shape with cables. The data passes from one client to the next in one direction until it reaches it’s destination.

A single cable connects all of the clients, printers, servers and other components together. At each end there is a terminator. This stops data falling off the end or echoing back…echoing back…echoing back…

Clients, printers, servers and other components are connected by their own cables directly to the server. These are usually the layout choice in schools and businesses.

Replicate the networks in groups. Complete the worksheets Identify advantages & disadvantages of your network. Tell the class your findings. String = Cables Bus Network = Two people as cables You = Clients and one person must be a server. Assign yourself a code. E.g. PC1, PC2, PC3 etc. or Server Post it notes & Paper clips = Packets of data On your post it note write your message and it’s destination

Advantage Transmissions are simple as data travels in one direction No Data Collisions Extra computers can be added easily but the network must be shut down to do so. Disadvantage If a single machine is switched off the network fails. If a cable breaks, the network fails. Data must pass through every computer. Problems within the network can be hard to fix.

Advantage Easy to install Cheap to install, as it doesn’t require much cable Easy to add extra Workstations Disadvantage If the main cable fails or gets damaged the whole network will fail. As more workstations are connected the performance of the network will become slower because of data collisions Every workstation on the network "sees" all of the data on the network – this is a security risk

Advantage Very reliable – if one cable or device fails then all the others will continue to work High performing as no data collisions can occur Disadvantage Expensive to install as this type of network uses the most cable (network cable is expensive) Extra hardware required (hubs or switches) which adds to cost If a hub or switch fails all the devices connected to it will have no network connection
