Confession & Forgiveness P: Let us confess our sins in the presence of God and of each other.

C: We confess that we are born in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, by what we have done and by what we have failed to do. We have not loved you with our whole heart, and we have not loved our neighbour as ourselves. We deserve your eternal punishment.

For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen.

REMEMBERING GOD IN THE GOOD TIMES! Sermon REMEMBERING GOD IN THE GOOD TIMES! DEUTERONOMY 8:7-18

11 Be careful that you do not forget the Lord your God…

“Over a half century ago, while I was still a child, I recall hearing a number of old people offer the following explanation for the great disasters that had befallen Russia: "Men have forgotten God; that's why all this has happened." Since then I have spent well-nigh 50 years working on the history of our revolution; in the process I have read hundreds of books, collected hundreds of personal testimonies, and have already contributed eight volumes of my own toward the effort of clearing away the rubble left by that upheaval……

…..But if I were asked today to formulate as concisely as possible the main cause of the ruinous revolution that swallowed up some 60 million of our people, I could not put it more accurately than to repeat: "Men have forgotten God; that's why all this has happened.” Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

DEUTERONOMY 8:7-9 “7 For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land—a land with brooks, streams, and deep springs gushing out into the valleys and hills; 8 a land with wheat and barley, vines and fig trees, pomegranates, olive oil and honey; 9 a land where bread will not be scarce and you will lack nothing; a land where the rocks are iron and you can dig copper out of the hills.”

REMEMBERING GOD IN THE GOOD TIMES… I. KEEPS GOD IN HIS RIGHTFUL PLACE 10 When you have eaten and are satisfied, praise the Lord your God for the good land he has given you. 11 Be careful that you do not forget the Lord your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving you this day.

REMEMBERING GOD IN THE GOOD TIMES… II. KEEPS US IN OUR RIGHTFUL PLACE 11 Be careful that you do not forget the Lord your God…12 Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down, 13 and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied, 14 then your heart will become proud and you will forget the Lord your God…..17 You may say to yourself, “My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.” 18 But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.

REMEMBERING GOD IN THE GOOD TIMES! DEUTERONOMY 8:7-18

One Family (AT 62)

1. One family, we’re together; One family now and ever; Sharing the sorrow we have sometimes to share, Giving our hearts to show that we care.

2. Give me your hand and I’ll love you; Open your heart and I’ll find you. When faith is low I’ll show you Jesus as your friend, When times are good I will lean on you.

3. Some day when this life is over, We’ll stand in heaven together. Till then I ask you just to help me on my way, Point me to Jesus and tell me he cares.

4. One in the faith that unites us, One in the Lord who has saved us, One in the hope of life with Jesus our King, One family, together we stay evermore.  ©1975 Geoff Strelan Used by permission

BAPTISM DIALOGUE FROM THE SMALL CATECHISM

What is baptism? P: We come to celebrate the good news of baptism. P: Baptism is not just water used on its own. It is water used together with God's word, in the way that God has commanded.

C. What does baptism give us? P: In baptism God gives us forgiveness of sins, freedom from death and the devil, and life with God forever. God gives these things to everyone who believes what he has promised.  Our Lord Jesus Christ says: Whoever believes and is baptised will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.

C. How can water give us God's gifts? P: We don't get God's gifts in baptism just by using water. We get them by using God's word with the water and by believing what God says. If we use water on its own without God's word, that's not baptism. But when we use God's word with the water, the Holy Spirit shows God's love for us by washing us clean from sin and giving us new life.

P: The Bible says: God saved us because of his mercy. God washed us by the power of the Holy Spirit. He gave us new birth and a fresh beginning. God sent Jesus Christ our Saviour to give us his Spirit. Jesus treated us much better than we deserve. He made us acceptable to God and gave us the hope of eternal life. This message is certainly true.

C. What does baptism mean for everyday living? P: Because we have been baptised, we should keep on drowning the old nature we were born with; everything selfish and sinful in us has to die. This happens when day after day we are sorry for the wrong things we have done, and ask God to forgive us.

P:. And the new nature God has given us in P: And the new nature God has given us in baptism should come to life day after day. We should live as new people, who do what is right and good and live with God forever. What does the Bible say? When we were baptised, we died and were buried with Christ. We were baptised, so that we would live a new life, as Christ was raised to life by the glory of God the Father.

The Lord’s Prayer Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen.

Alana Jade Otto

The Apostle’s Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell.

The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God, the Father almighty, from thence he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Alana Jade Otto

Pass My Love around (AT93)

Chorus: Pass my love around; Pick right up, and take my brothers’ hand, And pass my love around.

1. I gave my body and my blood for you; Now this is all that I ask you to do, Now this is all that I ask: just – Pass my love around; Pick right up, and take my brothers’ hand, And pass my love around.

2. I lived and died to set men free from sin; Now be my presence to all men, Now be my presence to all men: and – Pass my love around; Pick right up, and take my brothers’ hand, And pass my love around.

3. My love and joy I leave will never cease; Now be my instrument of peace, Now be my instrument of peace: and – Pass my love around; Pick right up, and take my brothers’ hand, And pass my love around.

4. My Word and truth to you I leave behind, Now be my witness to mankind, Now be my witness to mankind: and - Pass my love around; Pick right up, and take my brothers’ hand, And pass my love around. ©1970 David Yantis/ Word Music CCL Licence No 225140 Used by permission
