ISTANBUL RESIDENTIAL TRIP BESA residential trips Learning Schedule Trip information Questions

BESA RESIDENTIAL TRIPS Positively impact attitudes, beliefs and self-perceptions such as independence, confidence, self-esteem, personal effectiveness and coping strategies. Helps the development of interpersonal and social skills. Adds value to classroom experience. Outdoor learning and particularly residential learning improves long-memory of learning. Links affective and cognitive learning which develops higher order thinking. Good fun! Peacock, A. (2006). Changing minds: The Lasting Impact of School Trips (UK). University of Exeter, The Innovation Centre. Rickinson, M. e. (2004). A review of research on outdoor learning. London: Field Studies Council.

LEARNING DISCOVERY The Big Idea Finding out new things is a human driver and affects things for better and worse. ISTANBUL

LEARNING HISTORY Ever since humans learned to walk, they have been driven by the desire to discover new places to further their own wealth, knowledge or prestige. In this unit students investigate how exploration has affected things for better and worse across human history. GEOGRAPHY They consider how some groups of people transitioned from their nomadic lifestyle, following animal migration for food, to building settlements. Through researching settlements in their own country and region of the world (and possibly comparing this to another if they contact a school elsewhere in the world), they identify how and why these settlements have grown and changed over time as a result of people finding out new things. ISTANBUL

LEARNING MUSIC In this unit students learn about a range of ‘new music’ spanning five centuries and consider how musicians have found out new things by using instruments and interpreting musical elements differently and how this has affected music historically. ART In this unit students are encouraged to experiment and explore new ways of working with materials and ideas in order to find out new ways they can make art. They learn about a variety of techniques that artists have employed and consider the artists’ motivations and interests as well as the impact these works have had. ISTANBUL

LEARNING SCIENCE Forces direct the world around us and our investigation and understanding of forces has helped us discover the environment around us and the wider universe. ISTANBUL
