Divine Command Theory (Religious Authority) Copy the information above about Religious Authority into your jotter.

Ned Flanders RELIGIOUS AUTHORITY Ned Flanders is a good example of someone who follows religious authority. He tries to follow his religion throughout his life.

Religious Authority Task 1: Complete this table to show where these religious people might get guidance from. The first one has been done for you. Word Bank Qur’an Bible Torah A BuddhistThe Buddha’s teachings. A ChristianThe ______. A MuslimThe ________. A JewThe ________.

RELIGIOUS AUTHORITY – THE TEN COMMANDMENTS

For Jews and Christians, these teachings are very important They are thought to be over three thousand years old They can be found in Exodus, ch 20 and Deuteronomy, ch 5. RELIGIOUS AUTHORITY – THE TEN COMMANDMENTS

Believers say that God gave the command- ments to Moses at Mt Sinai (in present-day Egypt). Near the summit of Mt Sinai, where Moses received the 10 Commandments. The mountain is about 7,000 feet high. RELIGIOUS AUTHORITY – THE TEN COMMANDMENTS

Many believe that God wrote the commandments on two pieces of stone. RELIGIOUS AUTHORITY – THE TEN COMMANDMENTS

These stone ‘tablets’ were then kept inside a specially made box called the ark of the covenant This was kept at the temple in Jerusalem Experts think the ark was destroyed long ago – perhaps before the time of Jesus. A model of the ancient Jewish temple in Jerusalem. The Romans destroyed it in 70 AD. RELIGIOUS AUTHORITY – THE TEN COMMANDMENTS

The ark cropped up in the 1980s blockbuster ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’. RELIGIOUS AUTHORITY – THE TEN COMMANDMENTS

Here are the 10 Commandments. With a partner, decide which are the most important and which are the least important. List them in order of importance in your jotter: no 1 – most important no 10 – least important. RELIGIOUS AUTHORITY – THE TEN COMMANDMENTS

THE TEN COMMANDMENTS You must not commit adultery. You shall not make for yourself any idol, nor bow down to it or worship it. You shall remember and keep the Sabbath day holy. You must not steal. You must not be envious of your neighbour's goods. You shall not be envious of his house nor his wife, nor anything that belongs to your neighbour. Respect your father and mother. You must not give false evidence against your neighbour. You shall have no other Gods but me. You must not kill. You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God.

If the 10 Commandments were being written today, which ones might you want removed? Write out another commandment (for each one you remove) which you think is more appropriate for today’s world, eg - always oppose racism. RELIGIOUS AUTHORITY – THE TEN COMMANDMENTS

THE TEN COMMANDMENTS - IN ORIGINAL ORDER 1.You shall have no other Gods but me. 2.You shall not make for yourself any idol, nor bow down to it or worship it. 3.You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God. 4.You shall remember and keep the Sabbath day holy. 5.Respect your father and mother. 6.You must not kill. 7.You must not commit adultery. 8.You must not steal. 9.You must not give false evidence against your neighbour. 10.You must not be envious of your neighbour's goods. You shall not be envious of his house nor his wife, nor anything that belongs to your neighbour.

The Ten Precepts 1.I will not harm living things 2.I will not take things not freely given 3.I will not be unfaithful to my partner 4.I will not use drink or drugs 5.I will not use false speech 6.I will not eat untimely meals 7.I will not be involved in singing, dancing or music 8.I will not use perfumes or wear jewellery 9.I will not sleep in a high or luxurious bed 10.I will not handle gold or silver

The Ten Precepts The Ten Precepts are rules for life which Buddhists will always try to follow. They tell them how to act in every day situations and how to make moral decisions. They also tell Buddhist monks how to live a life focused on their religion. Buddhist monks in the prayer hall at Samye Ling Tibetan Temple in Dumfries.

The Ten Precepts Lay or ordinary Buddhists will try their best to follow the first five of the Precepts. Buddhist Monks will follow all ten of them. A picture of the Buddhist Temple ‘Samye Ling’ in Dumfries.

The Ten Precepts 1.Who follows all ten of the Precepts, and who follows only the first five? 2.Which of the Precepts do you think would be the most difficult to follow and why? 3.Which of the Precepts is the best advice for life? (In your opinion.) Say why! 4.Using the sheet provided draw pictures to show the three Precepts you most agree with and the three you least agree with.
