How to Tell a Great Story: 10 Simple Building Blocks

Know What a Powerful Story Is Core values Moral of the story 7

Figure Out What You Stand For What are your values?Wholeness Perfection Justice Richness Simplicity Beauty Truth Uniqueness Playfulness 8

Declare Your Moral Core belief An eye for an eye => Love your enemy “In the unlikely story that is America, there has never been anything false about hope. We will begin the next great chapter in America’s story with three words that will ring from coast to coast; from sea to shining sea—Yes. We. Can.” 9

Now, Prove It is True “How do I know my Moral to be true?” Connect authentically 10

Who’s the Hero? Not the Church Least likely persons to change the world Relatable to the audience 11

Show the Broken World “Hey, that’s my world. I face those challenges, too.” 12

You Need Action, and Action Needs a “Villain” Your story’s action doesn’t start until the hero comes in contact with her villain. Make sure the villain is as relatable as your hero. Does not have to be Darth Vader or an actual bad guy. It can be attitudes, group beliefs, the economy, or the voice of doubt or fear that holds her back from her mission. Clearly name what stands in her way. 13

Conflict and Breakthrough Reveal the Moral It needs to be thrilling! You are revealing your core truth about how the world—God’s world—works. 14

Break the Mold (when you can) Normal sequence: describe the broken world, introduce the hero, introduce the villain, show the conflict, then the breakthrough—then, describe the better, or transformed world. 15

Stay on Ground Level You Are There Sights, Sounds and Smells 16

Story Power—A Simple Test Tangible Relatable Immersive Memorable Emotional 17
