Mood Disorder: intense and prolonged shifts in mood A person with a mood disorder might feel very happy or very sad for long periods of time and for no apparent reason There are two main categories of mood disorders; Depressive Disorders (major depression, dysthymia) and Bipolar Disorders (also known as manic depression; mood swings from euphoria to depression).

Depression a medical illness that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. An illness that involves the body, mood, and thoughts and that affects the way a person eats, sleeps,and how they feel about himself or herself symptom formation social functioning personality issues

Facts about depression Distracts thinking Makes your mind play tricks on you 65% anxiety Orginates from situations or bio-chemical Excercise helps releive 5-10% women 2%-5% men

Psychological and psychological effects distorted that you lose touch with reality hallucinations Suicidal impulses difficult to concentrate anxiety Unexplained aches or pains(head, face, back, chest and gut) No libdo(Lost in interest in things you used to enjoy) Heart problems Sleep problems Mental and physical slowing Loss of appetite

Causes of disorder Biological:Increases if you have a depressed parent or sibling. Psychodynamic:You must resolve early conflicts. Abuse Certain medications Death or a loss Major events(marraige,moving,graduration etc) Other personal problems Serious illnesses Substance abuse( 30% of people with substance abuse problems also have major or clinical depression.)

Treatment plan Psychotherapy:" Talk therapy",help the person develop good coping strategies for dealing with everyday stressors. encourage you to use your medications properly. Anti Depressants: medicines that treat depression Interpersonal therapy: to enable people with depression to make their own needed adjustments. a manual-based treatment. That means the therapist strictly adheres to a treatment process whose effectiveness is supported by evidence. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: to help a person learn to recognize negative patterns of thought, evaluate their validity, and replace them with healthier ways of thinking.
