Objectives Strategic advocacy engagements to raise awareness of FANR-related matters across relevant communications platforms Engaging with all stakeholders and partners directly, through our policy research or through the media Provide stakeholders with information/evidence for informed decision making and policy development

Expected Outcomes Awareness, appreciation and support for evidence-based policy development among the public, industry and governments Establishment and clarification of FANRPAN’s roles (eg. as a policy analysis network) in the agricultural sector; nationally, continentally and globally Broadening of FANRPAN’s network base – i.e. obtaining support of relevant role-players, to secure space for engagement

Recent FANRPAN Engagements FANRPAN CEO participates in high level African Ministerial panel discussion 13 September September 2011 On September 2011 the South African Government hosted the following Conference: CLIMATE-SMART AGRICULTURE – AFRICA: A CALL TO ACTION AFRICAN MINISTERIAL CONFERENCE ON CLIMATE-SMART AGRICULTURE This was a joint initiative between the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) and the African Union (AU). The objective of the conference was sharing leadership perspectives, exploring challenges, and grasping new opportunities for climate-smart agriculture in Africa.

Recent FANRPAN Engagements Canadian Deputy Minister of Environment Visits FANRPAN Offices 08 September 2011 On 7 September 2011 the Canadian Deputy Minister of Environment, Honourable Paul Boothe visited the FANRPAN offices. He was accompanied by Ms Christina Paradiso: Senior Policy Advisor to the Assistant Deputy Minister and Mr Patrick Cram, Second Secretary (Political/Economic Affairs) of the High Commission of Canada, who is based in Pretoria, South Africa. The CEO of FANRPAN, Dr Lindiwe Majele Sibanda, briefed him on the role of FANRPAN, especially as far as climate change initiatives are concerned. FANRPAN, as the local organizing committee on Agricultural and Rural Development Day (ARDD), a side event of CoP 17, also briefed the Deputy Minister on the latest developments regarding ARDD 2011.

Recent FANRPAN Engagements Seed Certification Workshop 30 August September 2011 FANRPAN hosted a Harmonized Seed Security Project (HaSSP) Seed Certification workshop at the Farm Inn with delegates from the four pilot countries of Malawi, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Participants to the workshop comprised of national seed authorities, seed Inspection and seed testing experts, as well as representatives of the national seed trade associations. Two key note papers and country status papers from all the project countries were presented. Workshop participants had an opportunity to visit Plantovita laboratory facility as well as the Official Seed Testing laboratory in Pretoria. Participants found the laboratory visits very informative.

Recent FANRPAN Engagements FANRPAN Adds its Voice to the Climate Change Debate In the run-up to the Conference of the Parties (CoP) 17which will be held in Durban on 28 November – 9 December 2011, the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) hosted a two-day National Conference on Climate Change. The FANRPAN CEO, Dr Lindiwe Majele Sibanda, delivered a paper and presentation titled “Ensuring an Equitable Deal for Africa at CoP 17”. The presentation focused on FANRPAN planned interventions at CoP 17, particularly Agriculture and Rural Development Day (ARDD) which will be held on 3 December 2011 at the Durban University of Technology. The key message was that a Durban deal Without a Dedicated Track for Agriculture is No Deal.
