What is “Smartphone”?  Smartphone is a mobile phone that offers more advanced computing ability and connectivity than a basic feature phone.  While some feature phones are able to run simple applications based on generic platforms such as JAVA ME, Smartphone allows the user to install and run much more advanced applications based on a specific platform.  According to a study by ComScore, in 2010, over 45.5 million people in the United States owned Smartphones and it is the fastest growing segment of the mobile phone market, which comprised of 234 million subscribers in the United States  Growth in demand for advanced Smartphone device also boost following market;  Processor  Memory  Screen  Operating system

3 Big Players in U.S Market  Research In Motion (RIM)  Canadian wireless device company best known as the developer of the “BlackBerry” Smartphone.  On 18 August 2009, Fortune Magazine named RIM as the fastest growing company in the world with a growth of 84% in profits over three years despite the recession.  Apple  Apple Inc developed mobile operation system called “iPhone OS” which is default operating system of the iPhone, iPod and iPad.  iPhone SDK (Software Development Kit)  Microsoft  Microsoft developed “Windows Mobile” for use in Smartphones and mobile devices.  Also adopted “Third Party Software Development” which is similar to iPhone SDK. (Established “Window Marketplace for Mobile” as well)

Winners VS Losers  Apple gained 1.2% of Market share while RIM and Microsoft each lost 1%.. Why?

iPhone SDK  iPhone Software Development Kit (SDK) is released in March 6 th  SDK allows developers to make applications for iPhone and iPod Touch.  Developers receive a 70% share and 30% goes to Apple when iPhone or iPod user purchase application for the “App Store”.

Effects “Little things do make big differences!”

Conclusion – “Open Source Culture”  The open source culture penetrated the Smartphone market significantly, both in hardware and software market.  Lately, “Google Android OS” is a popular open source mobile operating system.  Leading mobile device company “Nokia” has an initiative around “Symbian”, which has open sourced code as well.
