Types of Fashion Haute Couture Prêt-a-Porter Dressmaking houses in Paris that belong to the Chambre Syndicale of the Federation Francaise de la Couture and meet the criteria to be on its Couture-Creation list. French for ready-to-wear; literally, “ready to carry”.

Couture (koo-tour) The French word for dressmaking; applied to fashion businesses that make clothes to order.

Ready-To-Wear Clothes Is apparel that is mass produced (opposite of custom-made). Ready-To-Wear is a cross between haute couture and mass market.

Mass-Market Currently the fashion industry relies more on mass sales. The mass caters for a wide range of customers, producing ready-to-wear clothes in large qualities and standard sizes. Cheap materials, creatively used, & affordable.

High Fashion Designers They cater to specialty stores or high-fashion department stores. These Designers create original garments, as well as those that follow established fashion trends.

Designer A person employed to create ideas for garments or accessories in the fashion industry.

Freelance Designers Work for themselves, selling their designs to fashion designers and fashion houses, directly to shops, or to clothing manufactures.

Types of Fashion: Accessories- articles such as jewelry, scarves, hats, handbags, shoes, worn or carried to complete a fashion look.

The Trickle-Down Effect: A marketing phenomenon that affects many consumer goods. Initially a product may be so expensive that only the wealthy can afford it. Over time, the price will fall until it is inexpensive enough for the general public to purchase. When applied to fashion, this theory states that when the lowest social class, or simply a perceived lower social class, adopts the fashion, it is no longer desirable to the leaders in the highest social class
