Freshwater Ecosystems By: Abigail Tracy Freshwater Biomes By: Abigail Tracy

What is it ? A freshwater biome is any body of water that is made of freshwater, such as ponds, lakes, streams, and rivers. Most freshwater biomes consist of moving water and contain many types of fish.

What lives there ? There are many types of plants and animals some plants are water lilies, phytoplankton, and bromeliads. Some animals are alligators, otters, hippopotamus, ducks, turtles, frogs, axolotl, and bears. All these plants and animals have had to make adaptations, such as fish are able to take oxygen through their gills, fish also have to swim through murky water. All plants in freshwater biomes could not grow in saltwater.

Who’s who ? Producers in a freshwater biome are cattails, phytoplankton, and algae. Consumers in a freshwater ecosystems are diving beetles, fish, otters, frogs, newts, water striders, and giant water bug. Decomposers in freshwater biomes are fungi, bacteria, and earthworms

What damage ? Threats to a Freshwater biome are mainly human damage like dam building, over fishing, pollution, and global warming.

Interdependence Plants and Animals depend on each other to live. Plants provide homes and animals spread seeds and help with pollination.
