Sewing Machine Vocabulary Ms. Stawski

On/Off Button Located on the side of the machine. Keep off when threading machine or positioning needle. Power cord

Round plastic spool that holds the bottom thread in place. Bobbin Round plastic spool that holds the bottom thread in place.

Bobbin Case Holds bobbin and regulates bottom thread tension as stitches are formed.

Allows you to fill a bobbin automatically Bobbin Winder Allows you to fill a bobbin automatically

Throat Plate Provides a smooth surface for sewing and provides stitching guidelines.

Moves fabric under the presser foot as stitches are formed. Feed Dogs Moves fabric under the presser foot as stitches are formed.

Hand Wheel Controls up and down motion of the thread take-up lever, thread, and needle. Always turn towards your body.

Holds needle in position. Needle Clamp Holds needle in position.

Holds fabric in place. Presser Foot PF is down when sewing PF is up when threading.

Raises and lowers the presser foot. Presser Foot Lifter Raises and lowers the presser foot. PF is down PF is up

Reverse Control Makes the machine stitch backwards. Use at the beginning and end of your work to lock in your stitches.

Spool Pins Holds upper thread

Spool Cap Slide onto the spool pin to hold the thread spool in place.

Stitch Length Regulator Sets length of the stitches Set to 3

Sets width of the stitches Stitch Width Control Sets width of the stitches

Needle Position Control Controls the position of the needle. Leave in the center

Controls the tightness or looseness of a stitch. Tension Control Controls the tightness or looseness of a stitch. Set to 3

Controls the thread as it flows through the needle. Thread Take-up lever Controls the thread as it flows through the needle.

5/8 Line The line on the throat plate that your fabric’s edge should touch to make a proper seam. 2nd from right

Foot Pedal Controls the speed of the machine.
