Notting Hill Carnival St. Patrick's Festival Holi Photos Glossary

Notting Hill Carnival is a street carnival in the Notting Hill district of London. The carnival has been in existence since 1966 and takes place on the last weekend in August. It was the inspiration of the black immigrants from the Caribbean, particularly from Trinidad, where a great pre-Lenten carnival has been held for many decades. From simple beginnings, it has developed into a huge multicultural arts festival attended by up to two million people. Following the tradition of the Trinidadian carnival, great emphasis is placed on fantastic costume displays on fantastic costume displays and steel drum music. Calypso songs and soca (a mixture of soul and calypso) are also essential elements in the festivities. In addition to the lively procession of costume, soca, and steel bands which winds its way over a route of some 7.5 km of the area, the festival also plays host to the musicians playing reggae and hip hop, as well as hundreds of street stalls exotic foods and crafts from all parts of the world.Caribbean, pre-Lenten Calypso soul windsreggaehip hop Photo
