Who wants to be an Engineer? Or an Engineering Technologist? EARN BIG MONEY!!!

But, you have to be able to answer the questions correctly!!!

IUPUI is your student’s “lifeline!”

IUPUI School of Engineering and Technology  Large number of programs (39 Certificates, AS, BS, MS, and Ph.D.)  Programs are Accredited by a National Accrediting Agency – ABET  Small class sizes – 25 students  Courses are offered by faculty not graduate students  State-of-the-art laboratories and equipment  School owned and operated Computer Network Center with nine fully equipped computer laboratories  18 research laboratories available to students  2207 students  PURDUE DEGREE earned in Indianapolis

University College Admissions  Gives students access to our school who might normally be denied admission  Students are admitted to UC first  Offers seminars and advising to promote a successful college career  Allows students to start curriculum where it is necessary…..MATH issues

YEAH, but, do I have to like MATH???

Engineering and engineering technology are about the applications of math. Mathematics is a foundation. It is a tool. You must learn it – but you don’t have to love it!!

Do you have to be a nerd? Do you have to be male? Do you have to like to fix things in your basement? Do you have to be really smart? Do you have to be a loner? These are MYTHS!!!

OK, what are the choices, Regis??

What is the difference between Engineering and Engineering Technology? Engineering Technology  “Knowledge of mathematics and natural sciences is used to create and enhance technologies that benefit humanity.”  Hardware, software, and applications oriented  Focus is application of current and new knowledge to existing problems   the practical Engineering  “Engineering is the application of math and science to create something of value from our natural resources.”  Coursework uses calculus as its foundation  Focus is creating new ideas, new knowledge   the theoretical

Lafayette Program Degree Programs (continued)

Both Engineering and Technology programs are in the same school: Builds on the strengths of each other!

Co-op and Internships  Most are full-time, earn money and credit  There are many opportunities in Indianapolis  Examples of participating employers include: GM Metal Fabricating, UPS, Conseco, Diversified Systems and EDS

Scholarships  From IUPUI  From School of Engineering and Technology Full and part-time students are eligible Some are tied to previous academic performance, some are criteria based  From the individual departments

Average Starting Salaries for Various Engineering and Technology Careers as of April 2000  Manufacturing Engineering $46,040  Field Engineering $39,214  Power Systems $46,336  Software Design $48,099  Hardware Design $47,625  Research and Development $47,149  Electrical Engineering $47,403  Mechanical Engineering $48,991  Electrical Engineering Technology $47,766

It is hard for students to pick a major when there are no classes in high school that mirror these subject areas. But, our everyday lives are full of examples of the work of engineers. Check out

On to the Questions:

for $500: What does a BMET do? a) give bacon, lettuce, and tomato sandwiches to everyone b) some nerdy, technical thing I wouldn’t understand c) Basic Maintenance on Electric Trains d) Make a difference in the lives of others

What is Biomedical Electronics Technology?  A blend of EET and the medical profession. Health care depends on machines and BMETs take care of them. This is a two year degree.

What do Biomedical Electronics Technologists do? F Responsible for equipment in the hospital - maintenance and repair, safety inspections, and operator training.  Non-hospital employed BMET’s may be involved in equipment design and sales with a medical instrumentation manufacturer.

Characteristics of a Potential BMET:  Wants to work in hospital, not suited for medical or nursing school  Would like to “make a difference”  Problem solver  Would like to  “People person”  Able to communicate  Nurturer

BMET Hospital Job Responsibilities:  Repair equipment  Scheduled PM and safety testing  Clinical support  Incoming testing  Training and inservice  Purchasing/requisitions  Prepurchase evaluations  Risk management

What does a BMET study?  Human anatomy and physiology  Medical terminology  Patient care safety issues  Medical equipment function, operation and problem solving Examples: EKG monitoring Pulse oximetry Defibrillators Imaging systems

Why is BMET a “hot” career?  Huge demand, in Indiana as well as nationwide  Chance for a career – increase responsibility and skills through employer provided training  Very high pay for a two year degree

Why are Engineering and Engineering Technology “hot” careers?  Huge demand, in Indiana as well as nationwide  Many students are offered employment before they graduate, employers pay for them to continue classes at night

Is that your final answer?

Who should you call? Who should you ? Go to the school’s web site at Teresa Bennett, Recruitment
