THE NERVOUS SYSTEM.
The Nervous system has three major functions :  Sensory – monitors internal & external environment through presence of receptors  Integration – interpretation.
Nervous Tissue By Kristin Tuccillo. What three things is nervous tissue a component of? 1) Brain 2) Spinal Cord 3) Nerves.
Nerve Tissue Al-Maarefa College. Nerve Tissue Cells have very high ability to – Respond to stimuli – Transmit impulses.

Nervous System.
The Nervous System The nervous system controls and coordinates functions throughout the body and responds to internal and external stimuli.
Neuron Structure and Function. Nervous System  Nervous system is composed of specialized cells called neurons.  Neurons have long “arms” called axons.
Nervous Tissue. Neuron (motor)  Nerves – bundles of neurons held together by connective tissue (found in PNS)  Neurons – specialized nerve cells that.
Human Anatomy & Physiology, Sixth Edition Elaine N. Marieb 11 Fundamentals of the Nervous System and Neural Tissue Part A.
The Neuron  The basic functional unit of the nervous system.  Function: Send impulses to and from the CNS and PNS and the effectors (muscles/glands)
The Nervous System. Introduction In all animals, except the sponges, responses to stimuli depend on the activities of networks of nerve cell, or neurons.
The Nervous System. Functions of the Nervous System Receive Sensory Input Integrate Information (Immediate response, ignore it, store in memory) Control.
Functions of the nervous system The nervous system is responsible for: - sensory perception - cognitive functions - motor functions - regulatory functions.
Introduction to Nervous System. Composition of Nervous System Two main divisions Two main divisions 1) Central Nervous system (CNS) brain and spinal chord.
Nervous Tissue Two main cell types Neurons
Nervous Tissue: Neuroglia = Support Cells Support cells in the Central Nervous System (CNS) are grouped together as neuroglia Neuroglia literally means.

Warm Up List the events in the nervous system that occur if you accidentally get a paper cut. How does your body respond?
WARM UP 3/8 1. Use Na+, receptors, Ach, action potential, neuromuscular junction in a sentence. 2. List 5 things you learned on the internet assignment.
The Nervous System maintains homeostasis and responds to stimuli faster than any other system! Part A. Organization Part B. Neural Tissue Chapter 12 Organization.
NEURON ANATOMY. NEURON Dendrites: (dend = tree) cell processes that carry electric impulses from an incoming nerve to a cell body. Hundreds per neuron.
Parts of the neuron. The Parts of the Neuron 1. Dendrites - receive incoming messages to the nerve cell - resemble tree branches.

Presentation transcript:

4.4 Nervous Tissue * L: brain, spinal cord, nerves * F: transmit information

A. Neurons * conduct nerve (electrical) impulses * 3 parts: dendrites – short, collect signals cell body – main part, contains nucleus axon – long, passes on nerve impulses

B. Neuroglia (glial cells) * do not conduct nerve impulses * support, protect, and nourish neurons

inside brain: microglia – support neurons, engulf bacteria astrocytes – provide nutrients to neurons oligodendrocytes – form myelin (insulation)

* outside brain/spinal cord: Schwann cells - surround long axons gaps between cells = nodes of Ranvier produce myelin sheath (covering) Node  of Ranvier
