Kerri Procida Audience: year olds

.. There are more than 1,700 fatalities and 840,000 injuries yearly due to vehicle crashes off public highways. Just in the year 2009, there were 42 car fatalities in Camden County, NJ

 Men are more than twice as likely to die in a car crash than women.  This is because men drive 60-65% more miles than the average female.  Studies have also shown that 73 percent of all people killed in car accidents are male. Men: 29,722 Female: 12,747 Fatal Car Accidents in 2006

In 2009, 5,474 people were killed in U.S. roadways and an estimated additional 448,000 were injured in motor vehicle crashes that were reported to have involved distracted driving. (FARS and GES)distracted driving

 There are three types:  1. Visual — taking your eyes off the road  2. Manual — taking your hands off the wheel  3. Cognitive — taking your mind off what you’re doing

A new study shows a staggering 80% of all car accidents and 65% of near misses are caused by distracted drivers more focused on their burgers than the road

Why is it so dangerous?  It slows down your reaction time when approaching certain obstacles in the road  It delays your reaction time when there are different patterns in traffic

 1. Coffee  2. Hot soup  3. Tacos  4. Chili  5. Hamburgers  6. Barbecued food  7. Fried chicken  8. Jelly- or cream-filled doughnuts  9. Soft drinks  10. Chocolate TOP 10

Studies show that eating while driving causes 80% of all accidents

 Using a cell phone while driving, whether it’s hand- held or hands-free, delays a driver's reactions as much as having a blood alcohol concentration at the legal limit of.08 percent. (Source: University of Utah)

 You don’t drive in a straight line when you’re texting and driving.

 Talking on a cell phone while driving can make a young driver's reaction time as slow as that of a 70-year-old.

Each year, 21% of fatal car crashes involving teenagers between the ages of 16 and 19 were the result of cell phone usage. This result has been expected to grow as much as 4% every year.

Avoid talking on your cell phone Never multi-task while driving. Do not do things like adjusting your radio, compact disc player or GPS unit. Do not read while driving. When you need to read or use a map, pull off the road. Avoid taking your coat off or changing clothes while driving

Put makeup on, comb your hair and shave before leaving your house or office. Avoid eating or drinking while driving.

 Keep music on at a reasonable level. This will allow you to hear emergency vehicles.  Avoid lighting and putting out cigarettes.

Following these simple steps could be the matter of life and death!!! You decide!!!
