Welcome to Geoinformatics! Produced by Department of Geomatic Engineering, UCL

What subject could embrace all these applications? Finding a landing site on Mars Surveying underwater pipeline routes Monitoring volcanoes In-car satellite navigation Crime-pattern analysis Ensuring the fit of wings to aircraft bodies Fish population surveys Automatically spotting unauthorised airport access GEOINFORMATICS

GEOINFORMATICS involves analysis of spatial data In 2004 the US Department of Labor identified geotechnology as one of the three most important emerging and evolving fields along with nanotechnology and biotechnology (source: Nature, Vol 426, p376, 2004). collection display processing Using satellite GPS surveying on-site Using high- precision laser trackers Using sensors on aircraft and satellites

Could you be interested? an excellent all-round education in a scientific subject? Are you looking for... Geography and Environmental Sciences. Geoinformatics involves IT and Computer Science. Engineering, Physical Sciences and Mathematics.

GEOINFORMATICS Could you be interested? more clearly defined, interesting and diverse career opportunities than for a straight Geography degree? Are you looking for... Map natural resources. With Geoinformatics you can Predict floods and other natural events. Use GIS for retail analysis. Ensure the fit of structures such as wings to aircraft Be involved with climate modelling, cloud physics or the mapping of Mars.

GEOINFORMATICS The Department of Geomatic Engineering at UCL One of the eight departments in UCL’s Faculty of Engineering Sciences Formed over 40 years ago. Has always had a strong research interest in emerging technologies, e.g. satellite positioning, geographic information systems and remote sensing. We also run a range of world-renowned Master’s degrees, each specialising in different braches of geomatics, producing graduates that are much in demand by industry.

GEOINFORMATICS What Will You Study? IT, databases & software; particularly CAD, GIS and image processing. Measurement science, geometry, statistics and data uncertainty. Spatial data structures and data modelling. Maps, map-data, reference systems, projections and geodesy. Instrumentation, sensors and techniques (satellite positioning systems, photogrammetric measurement and laser scanning.) Images from satellites (remote sensing), laser tracking, bathymetric sonar and inertial sensors. Practical fieldwork overseas. Management (time, change, individuals, projects and data). Application areas: Built, natural, marine and industrial environments.

GEOINFORMATICS Who needs Geoinformatics graduates? ENVIRONMENT & GOVERNMENT "The new degree is welcome news, as the subject and geomatics in general is an area where expertise is scarce to find in a growing area of business." Stefan Carlyle – Head of Data and Information Management Environment Agency

GEOINFORMATICS Who needs Geoinformatics graduates? DIGITAL DATA SUPPLIERS "We are delighted that UCL have been able to respond to our industry's often expressed view that we continue to need high quality graduates and we are very happy to commend your new degree to students considering their course options." Vanessa V Lawrence – Director General and Chief Executive Ordnance Survey

GEOINFORMATICS Who needs Geoinformatics graduates? INDUSTRY "I was greatly encouraged by the scope of the course and its clear objective to furnish the industry with graduates equipped with fundamental geo-informatics skills that are of universal value." Ralph Diment Product Marketing Manager Intergraph Mapping and GIS Solutions

GEOINFORMATICS Who needs Geoinformatics graduates? Local and central government The utilities (water, electricity, gas, telephone and cable services) The energy industry (exploration, production and retail) The construction and surveillance industries The insurance industry and financial services Retail industries (analysing location and markets) Manufacturing and monitoring industries Property marketing and management Land and sea surveying companies Geoinformatics system designers, manufacturers and vendors And many others, for example….

GEOINFORMATICS What’s the Next Step? If this sounds like an interesting opportunity to you then do one or more of the following: Ring or the course tutor to discuss the possibilities further: Jeremy Morley: Visit the Departmental website for more details about the course and its requirements, and the department and its activities: Click on slide to re-run presentation UCAS course code: F891/892
