At Lionel Primary School

 Read Write Inc  Phonic Screening  What can you do at home?

 Previously learnt sounds  New sound (picture side)  Fred talk words  Show sound (letter side)  Hide the new sound  Green words-special friends  Green words –white side up (previously learnt)  Fred fingers –sounds  Fred fingers –spellings  Check spellings

 Learn 44 sounds and matching letters  Learn to blend the sounds to read words  Read lots of specially written books  Work along side a ‘learning partner’ building confidence.  Use their phonic skills to complete writing tasks based on the storybooks.  Children learn to spell effortlessly so they can put their energy into composing what they write.  Children learn to read effortlessly so they can put their energy into comprehending.

Children learn a simple code first. c-a-t ch-a-t l-igh-t c-r-a-sh

 Fred helps children learn to read  Fred can only talk in sounds...  (Fred can only say c_a_t, he can’t say cat)  We call this Fred Talk  If children understand Fred  they can blend orally  Blending is needed for reading

 Fred helps children learn to spell too!  Children convert words into sounds  They press the sounds on to their fingers...  We call this Fred Fingers Fred spelling  The children spell the words onto their fingers.

 By knowing the 44 pure sounds  By practising reading the Speed Sound with your child  By knowing how to blend using Fred Talk for reading m_ay may  By knowing how to do Fred Fingers for spelling  By practising the Monster/Alien words for the phonic check  Reading with your child at home

 When do you read?  Where do you read?  What books do you read?

 By reading your child lots of lovely stories and asking lots of questions!  Use these prompts to help you What do you think that character is feeling now? What is the character saying? What is happening? What is that character thinking? What do you think happens next?
