Barriers… What is a Barrier? A Barrier is something that “gets in the way” or stops another thing from happening

There are 3 main ways in which communication can be blocked… If a person cannot see, hear or receive the message; If a person cannot make sense of the message; If a person misunderstands the message.

Person cannot see, hear or receive the message Visual disability; Hearing disability; Environmental problems: poor lighting Noise speaking from too far away

Person cannot make sense of the message Different languages are being used, including sign language; People using different terms, such as slang, internet or text jargon; One of the speakers has a physical or intellectual disability, such as memory loss or a learning dysfunction.

Person misunderstands the message Cultural differences: different cultures interpret non-verbal and verbal, and humour, in different ways; Assumptions about people: assumptions about race, gender, disability etc. can lead to stereotyping and misunderstanding; Emotional differences: very angry or very happy people may misinterpret what is said; think about sarcasm… Social context: conversations and non-verbal messages understood by close friends may not be understood by strangers.

An additional Barrier can be… Listening Skills Can be external or internal; External (e.g., noise, an uncomfortable temperature or seating etc); Internal include a variety of conditions or reactions within the speaker or listener, such as: - Emotional interference. Defensiveness. Hearing only facts and not feelings. Not seeking clarification. Hearing what is expected instead of what is said - Stereotyping

Some common barriers to effective communication include: The use of jargon, could be over-complicated or used unfamiliar terms. Emotional barriers and taboos. Differences in perception and viewpoint. Physical disabilities: such as hearing problems or speech difficulties. Physical barriers to non-verbal communication. Not able to move any part Language differences and the difficulty in understanding unfamiliar accents. Expectations and prejudices which may lead to false assumptions or stereotyping.  People often hear what they expect to hear rather than what is actually said and jump to incorrect conclusions. Cultural differences.  The norms of social interaction vary greatly in different cultures, as do the way in which emotions are expressed. For example, the concept of personal space varies between cultures and between different social settings.

Have you understood the Barriers to communication? How can we overcome them?
