Standards Certification Education & Training Publishing Conferences & Exhibits AREVA Valve Enhancement Program Improved Valve Sealing Performance and Reliability

2 Bill Igel Bill is the Product Development Manager for AREVA Inc. responsible for product development and management of the Valve Enhancement Program. Routinely interacting with end-users and OEM’s to improve sealing efficiency. Prior to joining AREVA he was President and CEO of technical Sealing Products, the North American partner of LATTY International. With over 29 years of experience in valve, pump and flange sealing technology he is an asset from a technical and engineering support level. Both Bill and AREVA are committed to developing optimum valve sealing solutions through well defined products and valve enhancement programs.

Agenda VEP overview Components of the VEP New generation materials New material development and testing Testing results Conclusion 3

VEP Overview Industries served –Chemical –Oil & Gas –Power – Fossil / Nuclear –Pharmaceutical –Petrochemical EPA Requirements –Current & Future –API 622 / API 624 –Other standards and criteria – ISO , TA Luft, CHEVRON, self Imposed 4

VEP Overview The AREVA Valve Enhancement Program (VEP) is designed to meet the regulatory requirements set forth with respect to valve leakage to atmosphere. The only such program available to OEM’s and End-Users that: –Offers the solution through quality sealing materials and technology –Incorporates 5 year reduced leakage warranty related to components –Monitors and tracks valve performance and history –Is offered for valve blocks and not single valves –Develops engineered solutions for complete valve leakage and efficiency –Provides valve evaluation and on-site repair when required AREV A Propri etary and Confi dentia l - p.5

AREVA Valve Enhancement Program Components of the VEP Sealing Products –Valve stem packing –Body to bonnet gasket –Flange gasket (optional) –Valve body pressure seal Live load springs –Each valve will incorporate a “live-load” system of springs –This configuration will maintain a constant predetermined load value on stem packing –Assures sealing through thermal and pressure swings (system) –Maintains seal during periods of in-service consolidation –Designed to optimize performance at recommended load values AREV A Propri etary and Confi dentia l - p.6

AREVA Valve Enhancement Program Components of the VEP VPMD – Valve Packing Monitoring Device (optional) –Designed to provide a method of monitoring volume loss of sealing material within the stuffing box and provide advance notice of possible valve stem leakage prior to the actual leak arising. Responds to in-service consolidation and loss of packing load. –Remote monitoring capability under development AREV A Propri etary and Confi dentia l - p.7

AREVA Valve Enhancement Program VEP Warranty What it covers –All valves deemed acceptable for inclusion in the program –Various criteria to determine type valve, system parameters, age of valve –Program will address special cases (Control Valves) and use specific criteria developed for actuated, high cycle valves (limit number of cycles) –Applies to all components supplied by AREVA as part of the program –Provides for replacement components ONLY What it does not cover –Valves which do not meet the criteria for inclusion will not be included in program –The warranty will NOT cover items such as: –Lost production time –Safety issues which result in injury

AREVA Valve Enhancement Program VEP Database AREVA’s VEP database will track each valve that is part of the program including any service or modifications performed. Customized reports will be generated for each customer demonstrating valve and material performance during the warranty period. The database will track specific details for each valve such as: –Valve and component manufacturers –Installed components –Component materials –Gland loading –Application information –Installed location –Service history –Capability to calculate load and friction values

VEP Overview - Database

AREVA Valve Enhancement Program Features Quality Suppliers –Our partners are manufacturers of HIGH quality sealing materials –We are generating relationships with those companies which offer those components required to complete the program –Teaming partners are well respected in the industry as leaders in fluid sealing technology and products Experience –Our suppliers are well equipped to address the task with extensive expertise in fluid sealing and reduced emissions. –Each fluid sealing manufacturer has established engineering and R&D support available to assure the best and most effective solution is implemented as part of the VEP –Over 26 years of developing sealing solutions, when combined with manufacturers expertise, brings added value to the customer –This level of experience supports the success and confidence in the Valve Enhancement Program AREV A Propri etary and Confi dentia l - p.11

AREVA Valve Enhancement Program Benefits Only company offering a solution in the form of a program and not just a PRODUCT! Can provide the entire valve sealing solution for all industry Complete detailed software program to track valve for the customer Total valve sealing available through engineered valve kits Program can be extended beyond the 5 year period Value added –AREVA and our suppliers deal with these products on a daily basis and have the expertise to work with the sites to recommend the best solutions for their applications. –Capability to STOCK required sealing solutions to serve all industry providing immediate component delivery. AREV A Propri etary and Confi dentia l - p.12

AREVA Valve Enhancement Program Conclusion The Valve Enhancement Program has been developed to provide added value in the areas of engineered sealing solutions and an innovative warranty to support OEMs and End Users. This is accomplished by providing a solution through a program and not just a single product. AREV A Propri etary and Confi dentia l - p.13

Next Generation Materials The Valve Enhancement Program has been developed to complement the next generation valve sealing materials to optimize overall valve performance. Extensive Research and Development has been undertaken to better understand the mechanical behavior of sealing materials in an effort to extend life cycle. These next generation materials and advancements in yarn development allow the industry to comply with newer regulatory requirements. AREV A Propri etary and Confi dentia l - p.14

Tribology tests and results Study of the influence of friction coefficients Comparison of new and existing materials Benefit and “Added Value” of the Next Generation packing materials Content

To develop NEW products that: comply with the requirements in all industry impacted by Regulatory guidelines simplify valve maintenance while maintaining efficiency increase service life of valve sealing materials increase sealing efficiency, REPEATABILITY and valve performance Why are Tribology studies needed? (Friction – Wear – Lubrication)

The environment is one of our major concerns Today, we cannot measure leakage with only simple bubble detection A leak can be dangerous to individuals and equipment A leak can represent a HIGH cost with respect to safety issues and production costs Regulations have changed with respect to leak rates in many industries Taking Into Consideration

Load New engineered yarn and packing provide the following characteristics and advantages: Decrease the friction rate Improve the thermal resistance properties (temperature> 1110°F / 600°C) Decrease the porosities Improve the calorific evacuation Preserve packing’s chemical resistance Reduce stem leakage to atomosphere The Benefit

Initial products Friction coefficient divided by 3 Some results on top and bottom rings 1110 o F (600 o C)

Minimum quantity of cycles to perform in order to reach a uniform stress on the packing while installingthe packing Set of rings creep in relation to the quantity of strokes Friction evolution link to torque value Coefficient of friction of the total set of rings is a function of the stress on the packing Data obtained

Determination and analysis of the friction load: Results

More than 15 different types of rings sets have been tested and the results have been compiled into a database. As a result of these tests a specific software was developed to select and calculate the packing configurations required for a wide range of valves. Conclusion of tests:

When applying this data at the design or end-user maintenance level we can expect: An improved and more efficient sealing solution for the valve design We can evaluate the mechanical behavior and tightness of the components to determine if the materials and configurations provide the solution as required by the end-user or OEM Conclusion of tests:

The efficiency and life cycle is driven by: Conditions before installation Material quality and integrity Proper installation of material Adequate and effective loading  CONSOLIDATION Conclusion

Today, industry will benefit from new technology and improved yarns and materials which provide: a better understanding of fluid sealing products a better mechanical behavior – lower friction coefficient ( energy savings, smaller actuators … ) – improved life cycle – reduced emissions upgrade sealing characteristics and performances which improves valve performance, repeatabilty and dependibilty. Bill Igel – AREVA Inc. Product Development Manager Conclusion
