Movie time (4 minutes from The Man You Thought U Knew VCD 06:16-10:16) Chapter 3 Beginning of John’s Preaching The reaction of the Multitude Announcement of the Messiah Jesus’ Baptism

How observant are you? Name the Caesar, governor of Judea, tetrarch of Galilee, high priests when John started his preaching career. What do you notice about John’s dressing? How many groups of people wanting to be good? Who are they? Did John claim that he was the Christ? What did John say about Jesus? What did God say about Jesus?

Preaching of John & the Multitude During the reign of Tiberius Caesar the Roman Emperor Pontius Pilate was the governor of Judea Herod being the tetrarch (king) of Galilee Annas and Ca’iaphas being high priests Note the meaning of John’s preaching (3:4) Note his reply to people, tax-collectors & soldiers (3:10-14)

Repentance & “turning” 3:8-14 Repentance is not an abstract theological term or a matter of form or ceremony. But a radical change from a self-centered existence of greed, dishonesty, and discontent to a practical expression of moral and ethical relationship with others. (3:10-14)

Announcing the Messiah 3:16-17 John is not the one. But Jesus is. Baptism in the Holy Spirit – identifying as totally bounded to the Lord Fire either purify or destroys Salvation in Jesus Christ will be purifying for the true Jews who accept Him as Messiah but destructive for those who reject Him.

Threshing Floor explained. Spring is a time when the threshing floors are filled with the wheat harvest. The threshing floor is a flat bedrock surface surrounded by a low fieldstone wall, elevated for drainage and exposed to the wind for winnowing. A threshing sledge with teeth of iron or rock embedded in the bottom is pulled by oxen or donkeys. This breaks down the grain to separate the kernels from the husks and straw. The grain is then winnowed by throwing it into the air. The wind carries away the light chaff while the heavier kernels drop to the floor. In a land of uncertain rainfall, hopes and fears for the welfare and economy of the entire people focus on the threshing floor. Harvest is a time to celebrate the gift of continuing life for the community by giving praise to God.

Jesus’ baptism 3:21-22 “Thou art my beloved Son; with thee I am well pleased.” The words affirm that Jesus is the Son of God. They testify to His relationship with God. They also indicate that Jesus is the King Messiah who is to carry out the mission of The Servant. A thought: God has a calling for YOU too. Discover that calling and serve Him faithfully.
