The Writing on the Wall Printmaking & Stencil Graffiti
PRINTMAKING: The process of preparing a ‘plate’ and transferring the image onto another surface. PRINT: The transferred image from a ‘plate.’ PLATE: A flat surface that is built up or carved into to create a design.
Types of Printmaking
LINOLEUM CUT: An image carved into a linoleum sheet and printed.
“Still life with a Glass under Lamplight” Pablo Picasso
“Jose Guadalupe Posada” Carlos Cortez
“Self As Bird” Justin Miller
ETCHING: a needle is used to draw into a metal plate to create details
“Rhinoceros” Albrecht Durer
SCREEN PRINT: A stencil method of printmaking in which a design is imposed on a screen and ink is forced through the screen onto the printing surface.
STENCIL GRAFFITI: Stencil graffiti makes use of a paper, cardboard, or other media to create an image or text that is easily reproducible. The desired design is cut out of the selected medium and then the image is transferred to a surface through the use of spray paint or roll-on paint.
So, I know what stencil graffiti is now…but what is graffiti? Graffiti: drawing or inscription made on a wall or other surface, usually to be seen by the public.

What we will be doing: Individually, each student will design and draw a stencil. Upon completion, we will put all the stencils onto a “permission wall” to create our very own stencil graffiti “piece.”
PERMISSION WALL : walls and surfaces that are legal to create graffiti art on
PIECE: short for ‘masterpiece; a complex graffiti mural that takes several hours or days to complete
TODAY! For the rest of class, please work with a partner and create an original stencil design. BE CREATIVE! Do not just use names…this is not a tag. Complete 1 completed image with your partner. Think about the context. Will this be a funny piece? Will this piece send a message? Will this piece make you think about the state of the world? Finally, think of a name for your piece. THE END.
