Training Foundation Class Course By: Catrise Overby

Introduction  American Beauty Academy is a trade school that has two training programs, cosmetology and barbering. There are currently 4 locations between Delaware and Pennsylvania.  Each campus has an average student population between students. New student enrollment happens every month.  Every new student who is accepted into the program has to participate in a four day foundation class.

Foundation Class  Every new student who is accepted into the program has to participate in a four day foundation class.  The foundation class is a course that every student has to partake in during their first week in starting the program. The class is conducted by a current cosmetology or barber instructor.

Foundation Class Cont.  A recent student evaluation of the course was given to the new students on their last day of the foundation class at the Silver Spring location.

Student Evaluation  The evaluation revealed that 75% of full time students during the day did not feel the foundation class was effective. Many of the students commented that there was inconsistency with the instructor’s teaching style and that there is too much “down time.”  The same evaluation was given to part-time evening students. 90% of students felt that the class was helpful and informative. They commented that the instructor was very engaging and knowledgeable about the hair industry.

 The student evaluations help revel that each of the foundation classes vary due to the instructor who is hosting the class.  Every month different teachers present the class. There is no lesson plan, course description, course design plan nor any other course information to assist the instructor on teaching the class.  The Training Foundations class is a two hour course that will train all instructors on how to teach the foundations class. This course is intended to make unity on how the class is taught throughout all of the schools. The first training will be held at the Silver Spring location. The Director of Education will be the facilitator for the class.

Foundation Class Course Description The Training Foundation Class course will consist of three modules:  Module One- Policy and Procedures This section will go over the student policy and procedures in the new 2013 student handbook.  Module Two- The first four days This module will contain what instructors need to cover within the four days of the foundations class.  Module Three- Creating Lesson plan Instructors will create a four day foundation class lesson plan based off of the information they received from module two.

The Six Disciplines of Breakthrough Learning In the book, it touches on the value of evaluations. It mentions that evaluations needs to be able to measure the learning impact of the company; this is what upper management is looking for. This at times can be difficult. Chapter 6 goes into detail on how this challenge can be overcome by following the Guiding Principles of effective evaluation. This is to make sure that it is: relevant, credible, compelling and efficient.
