Why would Paris kidnap a queen? The tale of the golden apple…

King Menelaus of Sparta becomes furious at the kidnapping of his wife. Menelaus seeks help from his brother, Agamemnon – the High Greek. Agamemnon assembles “1000 ships” and sails to Troy. “The face that launched 1000 ships.”

Greeks position ships outside walls of Troy

City of Troy is led by King Priam King Priam’s sons: -Paris (responsible for cause of war) -Hector (bravest, strongest of Trojans)

Achilles – Greatest Greek Fighter What made Achilles so powerful? Describe the relationship between Achilles and Agamemnon.

Hector vs. Achilles Achilles is angered when Hector kills Patroclus, thinking the armored man was Achilles himself.

Odysseus -Greek king of Ithaca. -Great tactician, wise thinker. -Athena, Greek goddess of war and wisdom, fought with him during war. -With the help of Athena, Odysseus came up with the idea of the Trojan Horse.

Aeneas -Son of Anchises and Venus (goddess of love). -Trojan who was kept from defending his city by his mother and the gods. -Aeneas was instructed to flee Troy and take others with him to a new home – this was his fate.

Aeneas gathers Trojans and hurries them to the dock to escape…

Aeneas carried his father Anchises. Aeneas also led his young son, Ascanius, from the city. His wife, Creusa, was not so lucky…

Aeneas, with the Trojans who escaped, sailed from Troy and traveled the Mediterranean Sea.

-After numerous stops, Aeneas landed his people in Italy at the kingdom of Lavinium – ruled by King Latinus. -Fighting began between the Trojans and Laviniums. -Aeneas united the people when he married King Latinus’ daughter, Lavinia. -Trojans + Laviniums = The Latins
