The Truth About Styles for Log Cabins By: Summer Whitley

Types of Log Homes Handcrafted – They are peeled however, they are have not been changed from their original appearance. Milled – These logs have been through a manufacturing process.

Popular Corner Styles for Building Your Log Cabin Interlocking Saddle Notch Dovetail Butt-and-Pass Saddle Notch Vertical Corner Post

Interlocking Saddle Notch For this method of corner styles, you must first create a notch, or cut, into the top log and another notch into the bottom log. After creating the notches, you simple place the logs together creating a tightly sealed corner. This is normally found on log cabins with half or whole round logs.

Dovetail With this style of cornering there are several different notches made into the logs. Along with the notches there are slopes, or declines, on the corners of the logs which will create a tight fitting corner. On one log the slope will be directional one way and on the next log, the slope would be directional the opposite way. This is usually found on square styled logs.

Butt-and-Pass This method of corner styling is very simple. The logs simply “butt up” or sit against each other. This type of styling does not include any type of notching. This method includes logs that are flat on top and bottom and rounded on the sides.

Saddle Notch The method of saddle notch cornering involves round logs that overlap each other. There are no notches however, most of the times there is a curve on the log where it will fit simply on top of the next log.

Vertical Corner Point With this method there is a single log that will stand vertically at the corner and will hold the other, horizontal logs into place. This is possible by applying nails to the logs. This method usually occurs with larger logs.

Settling of Log Homes Once a log cabin settles, meaning that it is placed into its final location and has sunk into position, you must make several adjustments to the doors and windows. These adjustments include adding joints and siding to your windows and doors, adding stairwells, and being able to adjust your wiring, plumbing, and duct works when your home has finally settled.
