Asthma A Significant Health Problem Affecting Millions of Children Kayleigh Ringer EEC 4731 Module 2 Young Children’s Health Issues

What is Asthma? “… a significant health problem affecting millions of children…” (Marotz, ) An allergenic response Inherited Becomes progressively worse without treatment

Signs/Symptoms Wheezing Coughing Difficulty Breathing Symptoms caused by swelling and spasms of the respiratory tract Swollen airways produce sticky mucus, making it hard to breathe, especially while trying to exhale

Causes of Asthma Flare-Ups: ALLERGENS Mold Fur Pollen Smoke Respiratory infections Changes in temperature Perfume Chalk dust Dust mites

Who Has Asthma? More than 6 million children in the U.S. Asthma affects 2 out of every 10 children Most common in school-age kids

Management/ Treatments Avoid allergens that can trigger asthma attacks Rescue Medicine- Medicine that is inhaled and relaxes muscles during an attach to widen airways Controller Medicine- Medicine taken daily to keep the airways and lungs open and clear Inhalers or medicine that is inhaled (with or without spacers) Medicine that is swallowed (anti-inflammatory drugs)

Teaching Modifications Since asthma does not cause any kind of learning disabilities, there are no modifications that I would have to make for the student while teaching. However, if I were to have my students involved in any kind of physical activity, I would make sure there was a safe and healthy for the asthmatic student to participate in this activity.

How to Address Asthma in the Classroom Reduce environmental asthma triggers: mold, moistures, class pets, dust mites, air pollutants, etc… Make sure emergency inhalers are easily accessible for the student(s) with asthma Keep the asthmatic student(s) in close peripheral view to monitor the student for symptoms of a potential flare-up
