Making Inferences

What is an inference? To infer means to read between the lines You will use what you already know and information from the text to make an inference As we read, we may need to make an inference to answer a question that the author does not tell us the answer to

What can you infer about this boy? What emotion is he feeling? Why is he feeling this way? Who or what caused this?

Amy’s Restaurant Amy just opened her own restaurant. Her restaurant served various types of pizza. Her specialties was vegetarian pizza. At first business was very slow at Amy’s restaurant. Amy decided to survey her customers. After several weeks, Amy looked at the surveys. Customers seemed very satisfied with the taste of the food, but many people said that the prices were too high for the size of the food servings. After reading the surveys, Amy decided to create some new advertisements for the radio and the newspaper.

Questions about Amy’s Restaurant What changes will Amy make in her restaurant? What should Amy say in her new advertising? What were the clues in the passage?

Jude and Logan Jude stomped through the front door after school and threw his backpack on the floor. He ran up the stairs to his bedroom and slammed his bedroom door. Jude flung himself on the bed and put his pillow over his head. He was never going to talk to Logan again!

Questions about Jude and Logan What do you know? What can you infer about Jude? What clues are in the passage?

Picnic on Saturday Sarah and Ellie were excited about Saturday. They had planned a picnic in the park. They would ride their bikes to the park, play for a while, go fishing, and eat the sack lunches they brought. They were also looking forward to walking around the lake and feeding the ducks. On Saturday morning, Sarah hopped out of bed and looked out her window. Her shoulders slumped and she frowned.

Questions about Picnic on Saturday What was happening outside Sarah’s window? How do you know? What clues are in the passage?

Samuel is in a Hurry! Samuel looked around in a panic. The sun was shining brightly and his clock was flashing 12:00 over and over again. He rushed around to get dressed and get everything in his backpack. He opened the door and saw that his mom and dad were in a panic, too.

Questions about Samuel is in a Hurry! What happened last night? Where is Samuel going? What clues are in the passage?
