SLCP in Transportation Facilitated by: Mr Michael Walsh (ICCT)

How significant is the issue for the region/ your country Philippines: More than three quarter of air pollution is due to motor vehicles Maldives: Densely populated whereby one-third of the population resides. Observed an increase in respiratory disease like lung cancer, but there is a lack in political will to mitigate air pollution Malaysia: Effects of health due to air pollution is not a focus due to lack in data for motor vehicles and effects on health

Good Examples Hong Kong &Taiwan: Does not allow privately-owned vehicles and people are to use only public vehicles, and tourist island exclusively uses electronic motorbike Philippines: Have air quality monitoring stations, Certificate of Compliance for new cars in the manufacture sector, Private Emissions Testing Centres, and Air Quality Management Fund to conduct research and purchase equipment. Planning to develop inventory of black carbon sources China: Replace old motor vehicles Indonesia: Unable to replace old motor vehicles due to public response Berlin & Singapore: Have good transportation systems in place

What can be done & what support is needed? 1.Inter-government cooperation needed; 2.Have vehicles that are publicly-used but individually-owned; 3.Collect gasoline tax that can go to public transportation development; 4.Educate citizens on the impact of air pollution on health to raise awareness, and to promote public transport; 5.Create awareness among decision makers by exposing them to best practices to observe how policies can be translated to action; and 6.CCAC can transfer the knowledge and funds built-up to support Asia
