PCI/104 Explanation and Uses in Test Program Set Development

PCI/104 PCI/104 is a standardized form factor for computers and add-on cards. It uses the old PC-ISA bus and the later PCI bus. Compact Flash often acts as disk drive (original SSD) Versa-Logic “Cougar” Included dual ethernet Optional O/S include Windows 7, Linux variants, VxWorks Breakout connector gives USB, IDE, SATA, VGA, RS-232/422/485, DIO The format allows stacking add-on cards to give increased functionality Many vendors with many varieties We chose one that runs on +5 Vdc 1.2A Many add on cards (vendors/functions), we chose ConnectTech FPGA

Supportability Vendors determine support life of product. Same as PCs Continuous stream of newer PC/104s available for last 20 years from many vendors. Operating system upgrades are usually more work than upgrading motherboard (PCI/104) Price is typically $400 to $1,000 for PCI/104 FPGA card – Connect tech Freeform $2000, XILINX Virtex-5 FPGA – again FPGA availability determines lifetime of product – Input Clock 100MHz, 128MB DDR2-400 – 2MB Flash – FPGA configuration, 8MB Flash – Embedded code – 4K serial EEPROM – parameter storage – General Purpose User I/O 64 single ended I/O, 32 LVDS I/O – Serial 2 x RS-485, Ethernet 2 x 10Base-T, 100Base-TX – High-speed serial 4 x Rocket I/O transceivers (GTP)

Expandable / Flexible Windows/PC based add-ons – USB CD/DVD RW drives – USB JTAG Programmer Cables Typical programming software available for Windows platform Can program FPGAs and CPLDs – Multi function bus cards can be added to the stack. – Compact Flash up to 128GB available – Ethernet LXI instrument control

5 AAS-44C TPS Development ID Self Test Internal CCAs Communications Interface Card (CIC) 1A1 Industry standard PC104 embedded Windows XP microprocessor with a pre-programmed flash memory. This assembly simulates the Electronics Unit (EU). Used to send and receive Ethernet data from/to the TU. Controlled by the CASS through a RS-232 connection. A C++ program resides on the flash memory and controls the flow of data through the Ethernet.
