 He was born 7 th April 1964 in Wellington New Zealand  At the age of four his family moved to Sydney, Australia when his parents did a career change  He attended Sydney Boys High School  When he was 14, they moved back to New Zealand Where he attended Auckland Grammar School alongside his brother Terry and his cousins Martin Crowe and Jeff Crowe  He also attended Mount Roskill Grammar School which he left at 16 to become an actor

 He is the son of Jocelyn Yvonne (mum) and John Alexander Crowe  He has a brother called Terry and two cousins called Martian and Jeff  Both his parents were film set caterers and his dad managed a hotel as well  He’s married to the Australian singer Danielle since 7 th April 2003 (Russell's 39 th birthday) after co-starring on the 1990 movie ‘The Crossing  They have two sons  Charles Spencer Crowe born 21 st December 2003 and Tennyson Spencer Crowe born 7 th July 2006  It was said that in October 2012 that Russell and Danielle had separated

 Australia  From 1986 to 1988 ‘The rocky Horror Show’ he played the character Eddie/Dr Scott which was directed by director Daniel Abineri  In 1988 he played the role of Mickey in ‘Blood Brothers’  In 1989 he played the role of Johnny in the stage musical ‘Bad Boy Johnny And The Prophets Of Doom  He appeared in the TV series ‘Neighbours’ and ‘Living The Law  In 1990 he was cast in his first movie ‘The Crossing’  He was also hired for the movie ‘Blood Oath (AKA Prisoners Of The Sun)’ which was released a month earlier than ‘The Crossing’  In 1991 he was in the movie ‘Proof’ and won his Best Supporting Actor award  In 1992 he starred in the first episode of the second series of ‘Police Rescue’  Also in 1992 he starred in ‘Storm Stomper.’ For playing this role he won an Australian Film Institute (AFI) Award for best actor

 North America  In 1993 he starred in the Canadian production ‘For The Moment’ before focusing on American movies  In 1995 he co-starred with Actors Denzel Washington Virtuosity and Sharon Stone in ‘The Quick And The Dead’  In 2000 he became a three-time Oscar nominee, winning the Academy Award as Best Actor for playing the role of Maximus Decimus Meridius in Gladiator  In 2001 he was awarded the (Australian) Centenary Medal for ‘Service To Australian Society And Australian Film Production’  He received three consecutive Best Actor Awards for ‘The Insider’, ‘Gladiator’ and ‘A Beautiful Mind’  In 2002 he won one of his Best Actor awards for ‘A Beautiful Mind’ at the BAFTA award ceremony as well as the Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award for the very same movie

 He was also nominated for an Academy Award, but he lost to Denzel Washington  Between 1997 and 2003 he starred in ‘L.A Confidential’ and ‘Master and Commander: The Far Side Of The World’  In 2005 he starred in ‘Cinderella Man’  In 2006 he starred in ‘A Good Year  He appeared in the movie ‘Robin Hood’ which was based on the legend of Robin Hood and was released on the 14 th of May 2010  He played the role of Inspector Javert in the movie musical ‘Les Miserables’ in 2012  He also starred in the Superman movie ‘Man Of Steel’ as the portrayer of Superman's biological father, Jor-EI  In 2014 he played a gangster in film adaption of the 1983 novel ‘Winters Tale’  Also in 2014 he landed the leading role in the movie ‘Noah’  He also landed a leading role in the movie ‘The Water Diviner’ which was released on the 11 th of December 2014
