Coat Of Arms

Coat of Arms  The Coat of Arms of Canada is also known as the Royal Arms of Canada or the Arms of His/Her Majesty in Right of Canada  The current Coat of Arms has been the official Coat of Arms of Canada since 1921 – though minor modifications have been made to the current coat of arms since 1921  Our coat of Arms is closely modelled after the coat of Arms of the United Kingdom ( see Below)  The concept of having coat of Arms is European in tradition  A Coat of Arms is a design belonging to a particular person or group of people

Coat Of Arms A Coat of Arms will normally contain the following elements: Slogan Crest Wreath Supporter Shield Supporter Motto

Evolution of the Coat of Arms In 2008, MP Pat Martin proposed a motion to modify the coat of Arms to incorporate and reflect people belong to Canada’s first Nation, Inuit and Metis people

Coat of Arms – Symbols and Meanings On top of the “achievement of the arms of Canada” is the imperial crown which indicative of the presence of a monarch as Canada’s head of State. The Fleurs-de-lis was the first heraldic emblem raised in Canada. On July 24,1534 Jacques Cartier landed at Gaspe and erected a cross, affixed with the symbol of his sovereign and the royal house of France.

Coat of Arms – Symbols and Meanings On the advise of the Prime Minister, Her Majesty The Queen, approved in 1994, that the arms of Canada be changed and a ribbon added with the motto of the order of Canada: Desiderantes Meliorem Patriam – They desire a better country. The design of the arms (shield) of Canada reflects the royal symbols of Great Britain and France ( the three royal lions of England, the royal lion of Scotland, the royal fleur-de-lis of France and the royal Irish harp of Tara. On the bottom portion of the shield is a sprig of three Canadian maple leaves representative of Canadians of all origins.

Coat of Arms – Symbols and Meanings At the base are floral emblems associated with the Canadian monarchy : The English rose, the Scottish thistle, the French fleur-de-lis and the Irish Shamrock The motto of Canada is in Latin : A mari usque ad mare (From sea to sea). The motto was included in the Arms of Canada in In March 2006, three of Canada’s premiers called for a change to the motto to be more reflective of the vast geographic nature of Canada. They suggested A mari ad mare ad mare (from sea to sea to sea) and A mari usque ad maria (from sea to the other seas.) The motto remains unchanged today

Coat of Arms – Symbols and Meanings The arms show a royal helmet and draped mantle of white and red which are the official colours of Canada. The golden helmet facing the viewers symbolizes Canada sovereignty. The Crest is based on the royal crest of England The Canadian Coat of Arms is reflective of the 2 European founding nations of Canada. Today the Coat of Arms is considered a symbolic mark of authority and can bee seen on parliamentary documents, money and on the cover of Canadian passports.
