What is a Burn? A burn is when body tissues are damaged by heat, chemicals, electricity, sunlight, or radiation.

What Causes a Burn? Burns can be caused by heat chemicals, electricity, sunlight, and radiation.

What Types of Burns are There? There are three levels of burns. First degree burns- least sever burn where only the outer layer of the skin is damaged. Second degree burns- The outer and inner layer of the skin are burned. Third degree burns- All of the skin is damaged and underlying tissues are also damaged.

First Degree Burns Symptoms of first degree burns include red skin, swelling, and sometimes pain. First degree burns do not need medical treatment and will heal over time.

First Degree Burn

Second Degree Burns Symptoms of first degree burns include intensely red skin, blistering, and sever pain and swelling. Second degree burns can be treated by running the burn over cool water, covering the burn with a bandage, and taking an over the counter pain reliever.

Second Degree Burn

Third Degree Burns Symptoms of first degree burns include charred black and dry white areas on the body. Can also have difficulty breathing. Third degree burns can be treated by removing dead tissues and cleaning the area. Then they can use skin grafting cover the body back up. Medications and creams can be used to help with the pain.

Third Degree Burns

How Can You Prevent Getting Burned? Never leave hot items unattended. When touching hot objects use proper coving. Check smoke detectors daily. Don’t stay in the sun for too long.
