Plants and animals in the ocean

STEP

Plants can only grow where there is enough light

They can only grow on the bottom in shallow water

In the ocean, most light disappears in the top 100 metres Plants cannot grow deeper than this

Where the ocean is deep, plants have to float close to the surface to get enough light

This single-celled algae is about one- fiftieth of a millimetre across There may be one million of these tiny cells in each litre of surface seawater

Because the plants are so small, only small animals can eat them

This little COPEPOD is a relative of crabs and lobsters It is only a few millimetres long

Many different types of animals feed on other animals

Different animals live on or in the seabed

Groups like fishes have many different forms and colours

You have seen that - Many different plants and animals live in the ocean Most plants are simple seaweeds and algae

You have seen that - Small animals eat the algae Many other different animals live in the ocean
