Welcome to PSAT Training Test Day: Wednesday, October 15th 10th & 11th Grade Homerooms Please complete your October Testing Raffle card.

PSAT/NMSQT Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test The PSAT provides practice for the SAT. The PSAT provides students the chance to enter NMSC scholarship programs and gain access to college and career planning tools. The PSAT measures: Critical reading skills Math problem-solving skills Writing skills North Carolina pays for 1 testing opportunity; CMS pays for a 2nd testing opportunity (10th & 11th graders) Testing Time: approx. 3 hours Distributing Materials & Identifying Info: 45 min. Sections 1-4: 25 minutes each Section 5: 30 minutes 5 minute break after Section 2 1 minute break after Section 4

Important Information Test fee: $14 Covered by NC and CMS for CMS students If you have a 10th or 11th grader in CMS who is taking the PSAT (even if he/she is not at West Meck), you cannot be a test administrator or proctor. Please let me know ASAP!

Test Administrators/Proctors: Before Testing (Page 40) Prepare a seating plan (on the back of manual)…Do not allow students to choose their own seats. I will collect the seating plans and Supervisor’s Manuals at check-in. Remind students to bring No. 2 pencils and a calculator (4 function, scientific, or graphing) You are not allowed to offer calculators to students who may not have one. Working clock? 2nd timing device? Covered content posters? Uncovered classroom door windows?

Before Testing: Morning Check-Out 6:45 am Pick Up Time All pick-up/drop-off of materials will take place in the Media Center. Brief Testing Session and Sign-In for everyone involved!!! You will be required to count all materials, so come early! 6:45 - 7:00 am Make sure your room is suitable for testing. Be familiar with the script. 7:15 am Everyone reports to Homeroom Follow Checklist for Checking In Students Proctors: Report to Test Location By 7:30 am Begin Testing!!!

Test Day: Admitting Students 2012 PSAE Test Administration Training Test Day: Admitting Students As students enter, ask for, turn off, and collect their electronic devices in the white envelopes. Write their names on the front, seal them, and store them in your bin in sight of the students (on the teacher’s desk). Identify and admit students Utilize roster to confirm students Direct students to seats Alphabetical (Left / right and front / back) No late arrivals once Section 1 has begun No cell phones or other electronic devices Other than permitted calculators, students are not allowed to have in their possession or to use a cell phone or any other electronic device at any time during testing, including breaks. Automatic Misadministration Staff should DIRECT students to seats. -Alphabetical order or --left / right for instance. This is a good place for the room supervisor and proctor to work together These procedures prevent friends from sitting together, which creates temptations. No Late Arrivals: Absolutely no one may be admitted to the test room after test booklets have been distributed. Schedule any late-comers for the makeup session. . Students are not allowed to have cell phones or other electronic devices in the testing room

Test Day Requirements Write on the board prior to testing: Your six-digit School Code (sign provided) Your school address (sign provided) Today’s Date Start Time: _____ - to be entered for each section Stop Time: _____ - to be entered for each section Break Stop Time: _____- for the 5 minute break

Test Administrators/Proctors: Test Day Requirements Thoroughly study Supervisor’s Manual Be responsible for testing materials in your possession Read script verbatim…follow highlighting Uphold the Testing Code of Ethics Distribute materials to students individually Actively monitor students: no grading papers, reading books, texting, etc. Proctors can help distribute materials Student:Teacher ratio must be 34:1 Restroom Breaks: one student at a time with a hall monitor; test administrator must collect materials

Test Administrators/Proctors: Following Instructions Follow PSAT Checklist! We are using pre-ID labels this year, which means there are 2 sets of instructions (the supplemental instructions & the manual)! No U.S. territory addresses. Use Section Timing Chart on page 14 of manual to stay on track. You cannot move ahead to the next section, even if all students are done! Entire time must be provided. Collect all materials listed on the checklist.

Prohibited Aids Include, but not limited to (Supervisor’s Manual, pg. 8): Electronic equipment (including cell phone, tablet) Portable listing or recording device (MP3 player, iPod) Camera Pens, colored or mechanical pencils, highlighters Separate timer Scratch paper, notes, books, dictionary Earplugs, protractor, ruler If students are seen using any of these devices or if the device makes any noise (ringing or vibrating) during testing or a break, the student will be asked to leave and their answer sheet will be voided

Irregularities All irregularities must be documented on the Irregularity Report Examples and Actions: Supervisor’s Manual pgs. 22- 24 Irregularity Report is located in the Supervisor’s Manual on pg. 37 and online at www.collegeboard.org/testright Irregularity Report(s) must be submitted with returned materials Affected answer sheets may need to be returned separately (on top of other answer sheets), refer to Supervisor’s Manual

Irregularities Student answer sheets may be voided in the following scenarios: Student becomes ill during the test and/or must leave before all sections are administered Student gives/receives information Prohibited Aid (cell phones, etc.) Working on the wrong section of the test Working longer than the time permitted See official information pgs. 22-24

Important Facts: Student Answer Sheets Current Grade Level (section 3) must be coded correctly Schools will be charged for students outside of 10th and 11th grade CMS Student ID number (section 5) must be bubbled correctly Start from the left, bubble full 10-digit ID number Use leading zeros, if necessary School Code (section 6a) is NOT 6 digit courier code. Use College Board School Code.

Test Administrators/Proctors: After Testing If anything happens, ask students to close their test booklets and stop working. Mark the time. Ask your hall monitor to have Ms. Raynor come to your room. Refer to pages 22-24 for test day problems. Test Administrators/Proctors: After Testing Collect answer sheets and then test books individually. Do not have students pass them forward. Follow your PSAT Checklist to be sure you are bringing everything back to the Media Center. Proctors remain with class; test administrators return materials to the Media Center.

Check-In (Media Center) Look for the labeled bins for where to drop all items. The counselors will help with safeguarding test books and answer sheets. They will count all materials brought in by teachers.
