Part I: Exploring AMC’s Purpose, Mission & Vision

 Formed in 2011  Established by-laws and code of ethics  Created website (twice revised)  Co-Hosted Annual Conferences with ISF and MECC  Received Non-Profit charitable status  Hosted officer retreat  Provided several reflections online  Provided announcement for Jobs  Helped advocate for the profession through officers providing workshops and providing information on the website  Provided resources free and open to the public and divided by field of practice.  Worked with prison group to provide Islamic resources to prisoners on electronic devices

1. Purpose: Why do we do what we do? 2. Mission: What do we do and for whom do we do it? 3. Vision: How are we working (or hope to work) to achieve our goals?

Purpose The Association of Muslim Chaplains (AMC) supports and promotes the professional development of Muslims who provide spiritual care and counsel as chaplains and/or religious counselors in Muslim communities and in public and private institutions in the United States. Mission Our mission is to provide mutual support and nurturance for Muslims who are facilitating and providing spiritual care, counseling, and Islamic services in the community or in public and private institutions. Vision Our vision is to serve Allah (God) through facilitating and providing spiritual care, counseling, and Islamic services to all persons on the basis of compassion, neighborly kindness, and community service as emphasized in our Islamic tradition according to the Qur’an and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him).

Vision  Strengthen the multifaith and multicultural professional competency of chaplains.  Empower chaplains to demonstrate quality outcomes to those whom they serve.  Demonstrate the distinctive value of professional chaplaincy, which can be understood by external stakeholders.  Collaborate with accrediting and hiring institutions, as well as other organizations with which we have a common interest, in order to promote professional chaplaincy.

1- Set Professional Standards  Provide certification on par with standards set by APC, NAJC, NACC  Provide specialized certifications in particular fields of chaplaincy  Create “Endorsed Member” position (recognizing ISNA and MECC)  Develop and provide list of expected competencies for Islamic chaplaincy  Set a minimum amount of CPE units to join as Regular member 2- Promote Continuing Education  Increase number of seminars and/or provide video and/or audio recordings of them  Partner with Islamic and Chaplaincy education institutions for training  Advertise chaplaincy training opportunities 3- Advocate for Members & Profession  Write to colleges, prisons, hospitals hiring for Muslim Chaplains and encourage them to hire members  Place officers as representatives in other groups (APC, CASC)  Provide lectures and workshops upon request  Provide courses on developing one’s interview skills and resume 4- Recognize and Reward  Provide awards for ◦ Excellence in Islamic Spiritual Care Service, ◦ Dedication in Office, and ◦ Contribution to the Field
