Objectives Given this PowerPoint, students will learn the different characteristics of mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, and amphibians.

Learners This powerpoint can be used as an instructional method of teaching students of grades 1-3 or all levels of special education children.

Materials Class computers Presentation A teaching aid if any extra help is required by any specific student

Motivation Teacher aids will walk around or sit with students to keep track of how many questions in the presentation’s quiz at the end the children answer correctly on the first try. For every question answered correctly, they will receive 1 point of extra credit in class. Students will also be given a piece of candy after each correctly answered question.

Mammals

Mammal Characteristics Mammals are warm blooded. Mammals have either hair or fur. Humans are mammals!

Mammal Reproduction Mammals give birth to live offspring.

Mammal Reproduction Cont. Mammals are “viviparous”. This means they give birth to live offspring instead of eggs. VS.

Practice Quiz Question: Mammals Review Mammals

Which of these is true about mammals? Mammals have fur. Mammals lay eggs. Humans are not Mammals.

Continue To Next Classification CONGRATS! All mammals have some sort of fur or hair that covers their body. For example, humans have hair and dogs have fur, so they are both classified as mammals! Continue To Next Classification

Birds

Characteristics of Birds Birds are unique from all other animals because they have feathers!

Don’t Make this Mistake! Yes, the majority of birds are able to fly, but there are non-birds that are still able to fly as well. For example, Bats are mammals that can fly!

So… CLASSIFY BIRDS BY THEIR FEATHERS!

Bird Reproduction Birds lay eggs when they give birth. These eggs sit for several days until they hatch into the live, baby birds!

Practice Quiz Question: Birds Review Birds

What is the one unique trait that all birds have? All birds can fly. Birds give birth to live offspring. All birds have feathers.

Continue to next Classification CONGRATS! Birds are unique from all other animals because they have feathers! Continue to next Classification

Fish

Characteristics of Fish Fish are scaly, smooth skinned animals that can only live in water.

Fish Reproduction Fish can give birth to live offspring or lay eggs. THIS IS BECAUSE…

DIVERSITY! Fish are the most diverse type of animal. There are millions of species within the category of fish, and millions more that are still undiscovered!

So… Fish can have all sorts of different features!

Practice Quiz Question: Fish Review Fish

What type of offspring do fish produce? Eggs that hatch into fish Live offspring Both eggs and live offspring

Continue to next Classification CONGRATS! Under the category of fish, there are so many different species that fish can give birth to live offspring or lay eggs because they all have different characteristics. Continue to next Classification

Sorry, Try Again! Back to Question

Reptile Characteristics Reptiles can have either 4 legs or no legs at all.

Reproduction Reptiles lay all their eggs on land. This means they are considered “oviparous” animals, meaning animals that lay eggs, just like birds!

Characteristics Reptiles are cold blooded, unlike mammals who are warm blooded and can live in any climate and maintain the same body temperature.

Practice Quiz Question: Reptiles Review

True or False Reptiles are warm blooded creatures who have either 4 or no legs!

Sorry, Try Again!

Continue to next Classification CONGRATS! Although reptiles do either have 4 or no legs at all, they are COLD BLOODED, not warm blooded! Continue to next Classification

Amphibians

Characteristics Amphibians are unique because they can breathe in both land and water. https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRkbeu8zYOLhbbKc54KLnPPHOSr09NVaajDY7EfyqqVIfuC_kld-w

This is because… Amphibians have both air breathing lungs AND gills, or “lungs that use water to breath instead of air”. Amphibians have both! http://www.diffen.com/difference/Amphibian_vs_Reptile

Amphibians vs. Reptiles No teeth or nails. Smooth, moist skin Lay soft shelled eggs underwater. Nails and teeth for defense. Rough skin under scales Produce hard shelled eggs on land

Similarity and Examples Amphibians Reptiles Cold blooded Frog, toad, newts, salamanders Cold blooded Snakes, lizards, crocodiles, turtles https://encrypted-tbn3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQLuSlqaCQ9bBBn0pZ3kt3mP7jfrVOZcb43r0BJka5twFY3a1xY http://www.tutorvista.com/biology/list-of-amphibian-animals

Reproduction Amphibians lay their eggs under water. When they hatch, the offspring will live underwater until they develop their lungs. http://www3.ag.purdue.edu/extension/nature/Pages/Amphibian.aspx

Practice Quiz Question: Amphibians Review

Which one of the following is classified as an amphibian? Snake Frog Lizard Crocodile

Continue to next classification CONGRATS! Frogs are classified as amphibians because they lay their eggs in the water and when the eggs hatch, the offspring will start their life with gills underwater. As time progresses, the offspring will develop air breathing lungs and legs and venture onto land! Continue to next classification

What type of “animal” are humans classified as? Amphibians Mammals Birds

CONGRATS! Humans are mammals because they are warm blooded, give birth to live offspring, and humans have hair that covers the entire body!

Sorry, Try again!

What is the one unique feature that only birds have? Gills Wings Feathers

CONGRATS! Birds are the only type of animal that can have feathers!

Sorry, Try again!

Sorry, Try again! Hint: Remember, bats are classified as mammals and they have wings!

How do fish reproduce? By laying eggs By giving birth to live offspring Both A and B are correct

CONGRATS! Fish are so diverse and have the most variety in species and characteristics within one type of animal, so they can lay eggs OR give birth to live offspring, depending on the type of fish.

Sorry, Try again!

Which of these is FALSE about reptiles? Reptiles are warm blooded. Reptiles are cold blooded. Reptiles lay their eggs on land.

CONGRATS! Reptiles are cold blooded creatures who lay their eggs on land.

Sorry, Try again!

How are amphibians unique from all other animals? Amphibians are cold blooded. Amphibians have both gills and lungs. Amphibians have scales.
