G AS CHROMATOGRAPHY – M ASS S PECTROMETRY, GC-MS Explain that mass spectrometry can be combined with gas chromatography in GC–MS to provide a far more powerful analytical tool than gas chromatography alone. Explain that the mass spectra generated can be analysed or compared with spectral databases for positive identification of a component. State the use of GC–MS in analysis in forensics, environmental analysis, airport security and space probes.

BRAINSTORM In pairs, write down as much as you can remember about GC-MS from AS

U SES FOR MASS SPECTROMETRY At A2 you may be expected to interpret gas chromatograms and mass spectra which you did in AS. Make sure you can! If you want practise or some further examples, try this website chemistry/collections/spectroscopy where there are lots of resources and examples to have a go at! chemistry/collections/spectroscopy

U SES FOR MASS SPECTROMETRY Research and create a short presentation (2 minutes) summarising how GC-MS can be used in analysis e.g. Forensics, Environmental analysis Airport security Space probes Drug testing (athletics) You should include why it is used and what it is used to detect
