Definition From the Greek word hermeneuo “To explain” or “To translate” It is used in Jn 1:38, 42; 9:7 & Heb. 7:2 Hermeneutics can refer to any kind of interpretation. Biblical hermeneutics is the science of interpreting the Scripture

Misunderstanding Scripture There are at least 9 major causes of misinterpretation of Scripture A failure to recognize the communication gaps existing between the modern reader and the people of the Bible A failure to distinguish between the dispensations A failure to recognize different covenants

Continued A failure to distinguish between three ethnics groups within the Bible They are: The Jews, The Gentiles, and The Church A failure to study all the Bible has to say about a given topic or subject A failure to understand the context

Continued A failure to realize the prophetic gaps A failure to understand the reason for parables A failure to read out of Scripture (exegesis) but rather reading into (eisogesis) the Scriptures one’s own interpretation

Hermeneutics At Work Neh 8:8 Distinctly (very carefully and thoughtfully) Gave the sense (translation into a language the people could understand) Understanding (they explained or interpreted the meaning)

Tools Do not become arrogant (I do not need any help in understanding the Scriptures) Eunuch and Philip (Acts 8:30-31) Pastors and Teachers (Eph 4:11-12) Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance Young’s Analytical Concordance to the Bible (not exhaustive) That is, it does not list every word in the Bible Vine’s Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words

Commentaries Commentaries within the Bible itself Commentaries written by men such as: Barnes Matthew Henry Vernon McGee Adam Clarke The Pulpit Commentaries

Be Careful Almost all commentaries are written by Trinitarians Do not take their Hermeneutics (interpretations) on face value But tried or prove it against the Word of God
