Stranger Danger We use to tell our children to be careful of strangers in public, but now strangers are hidden behind computer screens and can impersonate anyone at any age.

Why do we need to teach Cyber Safety? “Kids who are educated in the importance of online safety are more likely to take steps to keep themselves safe online than kids who aren’t educated” ( 2010).

Startling Statistics  20 % of children age have been solicited sexually online; that’s 1 out of 5 children.  75% of youth who received an online sexual solicitation did not tell a parent because they were afraid to lose Internet privileges.  81% of parents of online youth say that kids aren’t careful enough when giving out information about themselves online. (Netlingo.com, 2008)

Startling Statistics  76% of parents do not have rules of what their children can do on the computer.  4,000,000 children are posting to the Web everyday.  14% of children have actually met face to face with a person they have met on the Internet.  1 our of 17 children have been bullied, threatened or harassed online. (Netlingo.com, 2008)

Startling Statistics  61% of year olds have a personal profile on social networking sites.  From MySpace has deleted 90,000 accounts because they were created by registered sex offenders.  45% of children have been asked to give information about themselves from someone they do not know. (Netlingo.com, 2008)

What can we do to keep our student’s safe? TEACH Cyber Safety in our Classrooms!!!!
