Welcome Parents! Groveland Elementary School 5 th Grade “What to Expect Next Year”

Curriculum Reading – Standardized test Language Arts (English, Spelling, Writing) Math –Standardized test Science - Standardized test Social Studies

Reading Skills Phonics (usually done through spelling) Vocabulary Fluency Comprehension Focus Skills – conflict/resolution character’s motives sequencing theme or moral making inferences main idea/details cause and effectcompare and contrast fact/opinion summarizing/paraphrasing

Success on “Cold Reads” reading test True measurement of reading skills being taught and cannot be read aloud to student Student must show test taking strategies i.e. 1.underlining/highlighting 2.boxing/numbering paragraphs 3. preview the questions 4. reading/rereading for understanding 5. checking over their work

What can we do over the Summer? Science Activities Take your child fishing! Free fishing days provide an excellent opportunity for parents who don't yet have licenses to take youth fishing, or avid anglers to introduce a friend to fishing without having to purchase a license. On these days, the fishing license requirement is waived for all recreational anglers (residents and non-residents).

Hours: Daily 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. in summer; 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. in winter Location: Take Rock Springs Road north from Apopka; right onto Kelly Park Road and follow signs The springs are part of the Florida Aquifer. After visiting the springs, have your child look online or check out a book about it.

What can we do over the Summer? Go to the beach! Look for shells/animals that have washed up on shore. Take pictures and then have your child look them up on the internet or go to the library and find a book about them.

What can we do over the Summer? Math Activities Give your child a budget and have him or her use the flier from Publix and plan what to buy. Give your child a budget and have them plan a “vacation”. Make or purchase some flash cards for multiplication and division facts and keep them in the car. Have your student practice flash cards for 15 minutes of travel time. THEY MUST BE PROFICIENT IN THIS TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN 5 TH GRADE!
