Improving Leadership Standards These six standards call for: 1. Setting a widely shared vision for learning; 2. Developing a school culture and instructional program conducive to student learning and staff professional growth; 3. Ensuring effective management of the organization, operation, and resources for a safe, efficient, and effective learning environment; 4. Collaborating with faculty and community members, responding to diverse community interests and needs, and mobilizing community resources; 5. Acting with integrity, fairness, and in an ethical manner; and 6. Activity 1: The six ISLLC standards Part A: 10 minutes Reconvene into the same combined A and B groups from session 3. In these groups you have 10 minutes to prepare a 5 minute activity which will enable the rest of the group to have a better understanding of the key issues and challenges which need to be addressed in order to undertake a fair and robust appraisal of a principal’s ability to conduct the functions associated with the standard you analyzed. Promote understanding, appreciation, and use of the community’s diverse cultural, social, and intellectual resources C. Build and sustain positive relationships with families and caregivers D. Case Study The goal of the second part of this session is to become familiar with the application of the ISLLC standards and one of the six New York State approved Principal Evaluation Rubrics. 8 February 8, 2012 Session 4: Educational Leadership Policy Standards

Activity 2: Case Study Part A: Individually (15 minutes) Read the case study distributed about Cascades Academy High School. Knowing what you do about performance management and using one of the Principal Evaluation Rubrics, look at the case study to determine the effectiveness of the principal, Dr. Blank. Give evidence to support Dr. Blank’s rating using HEDI against one of the six New York State approved Principal Evaluation Rubrics.
