Common elements of Christian liturgy, regardless of the branch of Christianity: Worship on Sunday (except Seventh-Day Christians) Bible readings Communion (Eucharist) Singing (either with or without accompaniment) Prayer Sermon/homily A collection or offering

There are several variations within Christianity, based mainly on sacraments: Sacramental traditions – RC, Orthodox, Lutheran, some Anglican More formal, always involves Eucharist. Prayers and recitations are more standard Reformation traditions – Baptist, Presbyterian, some Anglican More focus on Scripture readings – has a more lengthy sermon Congregational hymn singing is a focus Eucharist is celebrated much less frequently

Charismatic worship – Pentecostal, evangelical, non- denominational, others (including denominations who are traditionally sacramental or reform) Contemporary worship music (“praise band”) More informal, personal (time for reflection, individual prayer, testimony) – trying to “feel” the Holy Spirit May involve speaking in tongues, healing

Many Christian traditions have prayers in their liturgy that are specific to their denomination (e.g. Book of Common Prayer, Lutheran Book of Worship) In Orthodoxy, various versions of Divine Liturgy exist, and their use varies from country to country. (e.g. The Divine Liturgies of St John Chrysostom and St Basil are the most common Orthodox liturgies) Orthodox liturgies consist of a Proskomedia (or preparation of the gifts, before the beginning of the liturgy), the Liturgy of the Catechumens (or The Word) and the Liturgy of the Faithful (Eucharist)

Protestant architecture Church style tends to be simpler – fewer/no statues or artwork, simple Communion table Depends on denomination- those with full-immersion baptism may have baptismal tank Often choir or band is at the front of the church
