Welcome! Biodiversity & Climate Change Adaptation Our aims for the day Better “climate literacy” Some new friends that you can call on for help Greater understanding of the practical barriers and solutions to adapt biodiversity to climate change… …that you might apply in your area An understanding of how predicted climate will impact on coastal and terrestrial habitat in the region

Welcome! Biodiversity & Climate Change Adaptation 23 rd October 2008 Phil Collins Manager - Regional Advocacy & Partnerships Team Natural England

Agenda 10.45Climate change conversations 11.15What does climate change adaptation mean? 12.30Lunch 13.30Case studies Interactive session – how to go forward? 14.35Case studies 15.05Panel discussion 15.35Sum up and next steps 15.45Close

The scale of the challenge Future climate depends on cumulative emissions of CO 2 & other greenhouse gases 2 o C is “dangerous” But avoiding 2 o C requires stabilisation at 350ppmv CO 2 e i.e. below current levels! Stabilisation at 550 ppmv CO 2 e requires global energy and industrial emissions to peak by 2020, then decline at between 6% & 12% per annum

The scale of the challenge Any historical precedent? Economic collapse of the Soviet Union (5% per annum reduction) Current trends? 2.8% per annum increase Stern assumed 1%

Conclusion? Adapt for 4 o C Mitigate for 2 o C
