Marcy’s Math Curriculum
What do we believe about Math learning and teaching in MPS? Mathematics is about thinking, reasoning and recognizing patterns and relationships. All students pass through similar stages of development as they learn to understand number. Mathematics is not something you are born “good” or “bad” at. Effort and hard work create ability and understanding. In order to be successful in mathematics students need to think relationally rather than operationally. Efficiency and recall come from thinking relationally, NOT memorization and one size fits all procedure. Emphasizing “the basics” with struggling students will not allow them to be successful on on the MCA or in Middle or High School mathematics courses.

Sequence of Instruction
Minnesota State Standards State standards are approved by the Minnesota Legislature and they are the guide for all math instruction. The Minnesota K-12 Academic Standards in Mathematics were revised in 2007, with full implementation by the school year. They are scheduled to be revised in The standards are grouped by strands: Number and Operation Algebra Geometry and Measurement Data Analysis and Probability.
