Evacuees During WW2 many children were evacuated from big cities such as London, Birmingham, Portsmouth etc where the threat of German bombs was greatest. The first evacuation order was given at 11.07am on Thursday 31st August Many people were evacuated in Autumn 1940 when during the Blitz and then again later, in 1944, when Germany attacked Britain with V1 Flying Bombs and V2 rockets. Who was evacuated? Schoolchildren (827,000) and their teachers Mothers with children under five (524,000) Pregnant women (12,000) Some disabled & people Altogether 3.5 million people were evacuated in WW2

Lilly Mascot - Evacuee Lily Mascot was the evacuee sent to stay with my Grandad’s family in Wales She was 10 years old She came from Islington in North London She was sent with some of her school friends who used to come for tea and play. They used to go for walks in big groups to the nearby pond, make camps in the woods and have lots of fun. They enjoyed being in the countryside and loved the wild flowers. She missed her Mother and Father but said it was a big adventure and like being on holiday in the countryside. She liked going for tea with Grandad’s family every Sunday and playing with his cousins.
