Organizational Climate Survey

Why Measure Organizational Climate? Organizational climate is one of the most powerful drivers of organizational effectiveness and efficiency This is a time of high stress--proper management of employee morale is vital Little turnover of staff now but failure to manage morale may result in exodus of staff when economic conditions improve

How Well are You Managing the Climate of your Organization? Without a comparative context, you do not know The BPS Organizational Climate Survey provides that vital context Tracking organizational climate can help ensure optimal effectiveness

The BPS Organizational Climate Survey Some surveys too lengthy and others too brief 25 Item survey Seven dimensions –Staffing/Co-Workers –Recognition and Growth –Leadership –Compensation and Benefits –Physical Environment –Quality –Satisfaction

Survey Customization Break-out data by programs, divisions, locations Break-out data by roles Add items (no comparisons) Existing items may not be modified Modest fee is charged to customize the survey

How it Works Staff take the survey anonymously on line Each organization is assigned a unique web address (URL) Web address is embedded in a notice that is sent to staff Staff click on the link & are directed to the survey The responses go directly into the BPS database BPS generates the reports Virtually no effort on the part of the organization to administer the survey

Survey Management Organizational Climate Survey is managed from your benchmarking administrative page Click on “Organizational Climate Survey” in left-hand Administrative Tools section Organizational Climate Survey Control Panel will appear

To Administer the Survey Cory the URL (web address) that is presented in the first section of the control panel This is your organization’s unique web address Paste the web address into the survey notice you send to staff

Notice to Staff Sample notice is available in second section of control panel You may compose your own notice Notice must contain the URL (web address) of the survey Provide a strict deadline for completion Typically 2-3 weeks is given for completion Include how information will be used

Reporting Periods January 1-March 31 April 1-June 30 July 1-September 30 October 1-December 31 No late surveys can be accepted Surveys can be completed and reports generated in one, two, three, or all four reporting periods

Reports May be reviewed first day of new reporting period Click in “View Reports” on Administrative Page Select Organizational Climate in Report Type drop-down box Select the desired date Click on “View Report” Report will appear

Report Contents-Section I Overall Comparisons Section I compares your organization’s scores with all other scores derived from all behavioral health and human services organizations in the BPS database. Statistics: Your organization’s mean score, group mean, percentile ranking, standard deviation, number of programs, number of responses for each survey item, each of the seven sections, and overall

Report Contents-Section II Benchmarking Initiative Comparisons Section II compares your organization’s scores with other organization’s involved in your benchmarking initiative. Statistics: Your organization’s mean score, group mean, percentile ranking, standard deviation, number of programs, number of responses for each survey item, each of the seven sections, and overall

Report Contents-Section III Summary of Responses This section provides a break-out of your organization’s data by response choice (strongly agree, agree, etc) N and percent provided

Report Contents-Section IV Narrative comments presented verbatim Respondents cautioned against identifying themselves in survey

Suspicious Activity Monitors Efforts to “stuff the ballot box” are monitored and controlled Attempts at repeat administrations in same session are thwarted Two or more surveys in a row with all negative ratings are flagged Contact person is notified of suspicious activity by BPS via or telephone, depending on nature and extent
