Observing Water Snails Part 3

Daily Objective Each kind of snail has unique structures and behavior. Different kinds of snails have similar structures and behaviors.

Vocabulary Different – not alike or the same Float – to move along slowly in the air or on water; to rest on top of or be suspended in a liquid Land snail – a type of snail Same – alike or not different Water snail – a type of snail Vial – a small container often used for liquids

Introduction Can you tell me what is in this aquarium? Today we are going to observe water snails. We will be comparing them to land snails.

Observations and Discussions Snails in Vials Look closely at the snail in the vials with water. Where are the water snails in the vials? Are they floating in the water or holding on to the sides? Does the water snail have a head? Tail? Eyes? Mouth? Does it have a shell? Does it have a foot? Does the water snail have tentacles?

Observation and Discussion Snails in Cups Now lets put the snail in a cup. Does the snail pour out of the vial with the water? How do they stick to the sides?

Observation and Discussion Snails in Cups Now lets see how interact with new things in their environment. Add another snail to the cup. What happens? Add a piece of Elodea. How do the snails interact with the plant?

Compare Land and Water Snails Looking at both types of snails Are the water snails the same as land snails? How are they similar? How are they different?

Vocabulary Review Different – not alike or the same Float – to move along slowly in the air or on water; to rest on top of or be suspended in a liquid Land snail – a type of snail Same – alike or not different Water snail – a type of snail Vial – a small container often used for liquids
