Massachusetts DOE Biology Framework: Evolution and Biodiversity Central Concepts: Evolution is the result of genetic changes that occur in constantly changing environments. Over many generations, changes in the genetic make-up of populations may affect biodiversity through speciation and extinction. Explain how evolution is demonstrated by evidence from the fossil record, comparative anatomy, genetics, molecular biology, and examples of natural selection. Describe species as reproductively distinct groups of organisms. Recognize that species are further classified into a hierarchical taxonomic system (kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species) based on morphological, behavioral, and molecular similarities. Describe the role that geographic isolation can play in speciation. Explain how evolution through natural selection can result in changes in biodiversity through the increase or decrease of genetic diversity within a population.

Galapagos Islands Situated on the equator 600 miles off the west coast of South America, the Galapagos Islands were born of volcanic activity that still occurs on the islands today. Charles DarwinThere are few spots on the planet so untouched by human civilization as the Galapagos Islands. Charles Darwin called the islands "a little world within itself. The islands are a nature lover's paradise, for upon them thrives an ecological community that has developed in isolation for centuries, and has thrived in complete and pristine natural beauty. Over many centuries, animal and plant life from the continent washed ashore on the islands, and gradually these evolved into new and completely distinct forms. Today, many of the species on the islands are found nowhere else on earth, and this is primarily what influenced Darwin so greatly. Since Darwin visited the islands in 1845, not much has changed.
