The Galapagos Islands

Location The Galapagos islands are located in the Caribbean

Geographical Features The Galapagos islands have many unique features that make these islands a desirable location for vacations.

History The island’s first recorded discovery was by Fray Tomas de Berlanga. The biggest visitors were the passengers and crew of the HMS Beagle. This was also the ship that Charles Darwin rode on when he first developed the theory of evolution. In the 450 years of human history, the islands have been used as prison colonies, naval ports and research stations.

Cont. The oldest of the islands is about 4 million years old while the youngest is still being formed These islands are also known as Las islas encantadas (the enchanted islands)

Effect on the world today The effect that the Galapagos islands are having on the world today are extensive and are changing the world. The biggest effect that the islands are having on the world today is the effect from the “discovery” of evolution by Charles Darwin. This discovery has caused many arguments and discussions in the world.
