Hivos | Development of Bio-slurry Carbon Credits for KENDBIP Harry Clemens, Hivos Local Stakeholder Consultation Meeting Nairobi, 29 May 2015 Carbon Finance to Support Domestic Biogas Market Development Programme

Hivos | Carbon Finance for KENDBIP ACES Biogas Design 2011 – 2013 Partnership Uganda Carbon Bureau and Hivos (CDM Energy Switch) : LSC on 19 October 2011  Registered by CDM in May 2013, with date 24 December 2012 (3,8 t CO2/hh/year) Africa Biogas Carbon (ABC) PoA - Hivos led Voluntary Gold Standard Energy Design  Final phase: GS Review; Registration date 11 June 2015 Steps in history of KENDBIP carbon development First monitoring & verification period 11 June 2013 – 10 June 2015  Issuance of carbon credits expected in Q4 of 2015 (6,3 tCO2/hh/year; 122,000 GS VER in 24 months, to be confirmed)

Hivos | Gold Standard Climate Smart Agriculture From Energy to Land Use, Water, City Program 2012 announcement Land Use Change & Forestry: A/R, IFM, Agriculture In partnership with FSC and Fairtrade International, with support from Hivos and others Background: Gold Standard – scope expansion Gold Standard – Carbon Standard founded in 2004 by Civil Society: Standard for Emission Reductions & Sustainable Development  Voluntary Carbon Markets

Hivos | Gold Standard Agriculture 1)Peru: diversification of smallholder rice production by converting part of area into agroforestry: banana/ cocoa & (high value) shade trees Hivos Pilot projects to test new GSA methodology 2)Nicaragua: farm restoration from degraded land (coffee coop) - soil improvement (compost facility) 3)Indonesia and Kenya: usage of bio-slurry from biogas digester as supreme fertiliser

Hivos | Gold Standard Agriculture  Add carbon impact of bio-slurry: carbon sequestration in soils  bio-slurry liquid application, dried or composted Will be first or second GSA project in Africa Kenya: use of bio-slurry as fertiliser Africa Biogas Carbon (ABC) PoA and its first Project Activity – KENAFF  ABC/KENDBIP registered at GS as a Renewable Energy project - focus on use of biogas for cooking. Measures 2 ER effects: * replacement of NRB (firewood and charcoal), and * methane avoidance (manure)

Hivos | Carbon Finance: Gold Standard Agriculture Methodology development by  Methodological White Paper  Bio-slurry user survey  Feasibility study Kenya Domestic Biogas Programme baseline, project basic, project plus scenario carbon impact -> presentation of Andre Eitner
