USA Hockey Officiating Program ALL LEVELS

Registration Season Registration begins on the first business day in August and ends on May 15 following year. Registration can be done online at: Registration is valid in any District or State in the U.S., until November 30 of the following season.

Registration Ages USA Hockey has no minimum or maximum ages for officials. It is recommended regardless of level attained, officials not work games of their own age.

Registration (New officials) All persons who have never officiated must register at Level 1 for first season. Exceptions made by District R-I-C for applicants who have extensive officiating experience. No first time registered official may register above Level 2 for first season.

Classification Requirements  Level 1 Must complete online application. Must attain an Open Book Exam score of 35/50 Must complete an ice and class seminar administered by USA Hockey.

Classification Requirements Level 2 Must complete online application. Must have been “complete” Level 1 or higher within last 2 seasons. Must attain an Open Book Exam score of 85/100 Must attain a Level 2 Closed Book Exam score of 24/30 (no re-take attempts) Must complete an ice and class seminar administered by USA Hockey.

Classification Requirements Level 3 Must complete online application. Must have been “complete” Level 2 or higher within last 2 seasons. Must attain an Open Book Exam score of 90/100 Must attain a Level 3 Closed Book Exam score of 40/50 (no re-take attempts) Must complete an ice and class seminar administered by USA Hockey.

Classification Requirements Level 4 Must complete online application. Must have been a “complete” Level 3 or 4 within the last 2 seasons. Must attain an Open Book Exam score of 90/100 Must attain a Level 4 Closed Book Exam score of 40/50 (no re-take attempts) Must complete a Level 4 specific USA Hockey seminar and pass Level 4 Skating Exam. Must arrange to have an evaluation completed while officiating a high-level game by a trained USA Hockey Evaluator at least once during the calendar year.

Classification Requirements “Complete” means that an official has met all the criteria (test & seminars) at the level for which they have applied. “Incomplete” means that an official has filed an application and has not completed all the necessary criteria for attainment of that level. A new official (not registered the previous year) may not officiate until they are “Completely registered”. A returning official (“complete” the previous season) may not officiate after November 30 unless they are “COMPLETELY REGISTERED” for the new season.

Open Book Exam Completed at the Officials page at USAHockey.com –Accessible 24-hours after online Registration –Sign-in using Last Name and USAH Officials Number Strongly recommended that all officials wait until they receive their Rulebook before completing Strongly recommended that all officials wait until they attend their seminar before completing If passing score is missed, the official may re-take after a seven day waiting period.

Open Book Exam (cont.) Officials who do not receive the minimum score for the appropriate level, will be sent a retake notice. Only one re-take Exam per official is allowed. In the event the official fails the exam twice, they will become “COMPLETELY REGISTERED” at the highest level for which the retake exam score would qualify. (e.g... Level 1=35/50) There will be no opportunity to complete a Closed Book Exam except at the USA Hockey Seminar you attend.

Registration Procedures Local Seminar Coordinators mail all seminar materials to District Seminar Coordinator. District Seminar Coordinator forwards all material to National Office (Colorado Springs, CO). When all requirements are complete, Card and Crest are mailed directly from National Office. Officiating Manuals are distributed at the local seminar only.

Game Assignments Registration with the USA Hockey Officiating Program does not guarantee any official any game assignments. Officials are responsible to obtain their own game assignments from local game schedulers as designated in their area. Any Local Assignor who assigns improperly or incompletely registered officials for games that are not within the guidelines set forth, is subject to serious liability as they jeopardizes the insurance coverage of the officials and both teams involved.

Age Levels (Recommended) TWO OFFICIAL SYSTEM (2 Referees) Level 1 - Mites, Squirts, Pee Wees Level 2 - Bantams Level 3 - Midgets, High School Junior Varsity, High School Varsity, and Junior “C”, Seniors (no check)
